[The OMC 115-HP engine with jet drive on a Boston Whaler RAGE 14 won't start,] I had to pump the gas bulb to keep the engine running. The rectifier literally burned-up. I replaced both. I have:

--drained all four [drain] plugs in the carburetor bowls to get real gas

--cleaned all four [spark] plugs with plug blaster, and set gap to 0.030-inch

--checked all four [spark] coils, [spark] plug wires, [spark] plugs. I can see the spark in the sunlight so maybe it's okay

--used half-can of spray ether

[The OMC 115-HP engine] still won't fire or turn-over except a couple of times, and it won't stay running. [A] compression-check [we be done] tomorrow. [Give me] any other bright ideas [why the engine is not starting]

Timing, are the plugs hook up correctly. Are you sure the carburetors are getting fuel. Is there a kill switch to check? Just because you drain the carburetors does not mean they are working properly. Could have a stuck float or gummed-up jet. You may have to take them apart for a rebuild. Good luck

[I]f you have spark going to the right place at the right time and fresh fuel it should blow up and fire. Acid wash then steam. Re-build and synchronize carburetors. Should go. [Have you tested the cylinders for] compression?

If the engine did not start with starting ether being spraying into the venturi of the carburetors, a reasonable diagnosis would be there is no spark or no compression.

To test for spark you should use an in-line spark tester. If you are seeing an electrical spark without a spark tester, the spark may be jumping to ground before it reaches the spark plug.

thanks for the support, gents, really appreciate it - compression test indicates 80-90 in lower-stbd, but 110-120 in all others - Harumph?

Spark-tester (for (spark-plugs-in-cylinder-head) test over this weekend; thinking maybe should find a suitable mechanic and PAY SOMEONE? - I have found book at Library - I have time, tools, talent, but not the WISDOM that the book indicates maybe I should have???

carb-re-build may be next step - especially as much time as the boat has SAT (on it's buns) the last 4-8 years - it tends to six for a year then run for 3-6 days - then sit for a year - gummy-carburetors may be the issue..

I'm 'attempting' to NOT pull-the engine and do a re-build...

thanks - again for the support!
