On my Boston Whaler boat I have several Lee's of Miami rod holders. I believe the outside diameter of the tube into which the rod is normally inserted is 2.0-inch, per this drawing: http://www.leetackle.com/rhspecs.html I have seen a few accessories other than actual fishing rods which are designed to fit into a rod holder. Apparently rod holders with an angle are the most common, and most of these accessories seem to have a tubular base with a 15-degree or 30-degree bend designed to fit the rod holder and then turn to vertical. What is the typical outside-diameter of these accessory tubes which insert into the rod holder? Give me a pointer to an on-line source where I could perhaps buy one of these accessory tubes with the proper pre-bend and proper size. I want to make my own accessory for the rod holder, but it would be easier for me if I could find the pre-bent tube portion as an off-the-shelf item, rather than have to fabricate it myself. I do not have a mandrel or form to easily bend large diameter tubing. |

Jim: The tools/accessories that fit into the rod holders are different diameters, each company has its own size, the important thing is to have the cut out on the bottom of the tool/accessory to fit the pin at the bottom of the holder. The cheapest way would be to measure the inside dia. of the rod holder with the plastic insert, and find an aluminum welding shop to have something made to your specs,(they can bend or weld and make any size) also if you choose to spend the money you can purchase a rod butt from aftco to fit your needs. I would also check out Lee's to see what they have to offer also try Pompanette |

JimH - Although expensive, I think MAGMA has just the ticket - it is a tube with a "flexi-head" that can be adjusted to any angle. You can either buy one of their bait tables (like I used on Isle Royale) and then remove the table when not needed and attach other items, or you can buy the single "leveLock" table mounts directly from them. http://www.magmaproducts.com/Products/Mounts/Table_Mounts/table_mounts. html The heavy duty version of this mount retails for around $60. Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a search on the terms "rod holder mount" and found this: http://www.craigrodholders.com/Gimbal-Mount-Rod-Holder.html which is getting closer to what I want. I don't have the boat handy this weekend, so I can't easily measure the ID of the Lee's rod holder. This Craig insert accessory is only 1-7/16-OD, which seems small. I guess I better go measure the Lee's to get on a firmer basis of what I am looking for. |

One search led to another, now I found this adaptor--closer to what I want and at reasonable cost, about $20: http://www.boatfix.com/shop4/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=10324 |

Jim: If you feel the dia. is to small you can cut a bike inner tube and slide it over the part. Lee's 15 and 90 degree rod holder, Inside dia. with the plastic tube is 1 5/8 inch, without its 1 7/8 inch, outside dia, of the rod holder is 2 inches. Mine are chrome over brass... |

Jim -- The inside diameter of the 30 degree Lees flush mount rod holders installed on you 1990 Revenge Walk Through 22 is the same as the 30 degree Lees flush mount rod holders in my 1988 Revenge Walk Through (and all other classic Whalers that had them as standard equipment in the 1970s and 1980s. The ID is ~ 1-9/16" to 1-5/8". I have never seen a drop-in rod holder accessory with a bent tube; they all seem to be cut at an angle and have the accessory affixed to that bevel cut. Bert's, Craigs Products, Walker and Cannon all make downrigger mounts constructed this way that simply provide a flat surface to mount any accessory you want. http://store.cannondownriggers.com/products/325089/Gimbal_Mounts |

Jim, Many times you ask folks who post to be less vague and more detailed in what they are trying to accomplish. What are you trying to accomplish? If we know what you're trying to do,their may be someone who can not only help you achieve your goal but may have a suggestion on how it might be done in a fashion that may allow your goal to be reached in a different/better manner. |

Jim most of these accessories are for mounting BBQ or cutting boards to get away from the hull/gunnel The cheaper 20USD one apart from having plastic parts adds another complicated interface for you as it is designed for a specific gimbal insert. The Magma one Buckda suggests is far superior and more easily adapted whatever your use maybe Regards |

I want to mount a vertical pole into the rod holder which is a 30-degree. I could change the rod holder to a 0-degree model, but that might be less useful as a rod holder, cost me about $200 for new rod holders, and require some cutting and fitting of the gunwale and hull below to install. I have seen a few accessories which are just tubes bent at 30-degrees to fit into the rod holder, but I'll be darned if I can track them down again. |

This is quite amazing--GOOGLE placed an advertisement into the banners above the discussion that led me to exactly what I wanted: http://www.globaltecheng.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=5124& idcategory=65 |

Along the lines of what you are describing, I have a neat setup that the prior owner of my Outrage 25 bought, which is a boarding ladder that inserts into the rear rod holder in the gunwale. It works very well. I've not been able to identify a brand of who made the ladder. |

What is the purpose of the vertical pole? You may find that a custom fabrication at a local metal fabricator gives you the best result. |
