[The author begins by telling us that the engine under discussion is a] two-cycle [engine but forgets to mention that it is a 2001 Johnson 90-HP]. [The 2001 Johnson 90-HP engine] is running great, but lately when throttling back from higher RPM to lower RPM the CHECK ENGINE and LOW OIL [System Check warning lamps] will light up together. The beeper goes off for only a second, and then the lights go off and all is well. Oil container is well over half full, [the] water pump seems to be strong, [and there is a] strong stream [coming] out [of the confidence stream nozzle in the] back [of the engine]. What's up? Thanks in advance.

Check your battery voltage. |

And check the [System Check] gauge by substituting a known good one. There is no sensor for a CHECK ENGINE light in a 90. Unplug the wires from the oil tank at the motor and see if the light still comes on. |

My suggestion of "check battery" is because I want to check on the condition of the battery and its ability to hold voltage. When you cut engine speed the charging current drops rapidly. The battery voltage may be falling off rapidly as this happens. If the voltage supply to the SYSTEM CHECK gauge falls below a certain threshold, the gauge may begin to restart its self-check sequence. This may be what you are seeing when the two annunciator lamps illuminate and aural alert sounds briefly. |
