Has anyone installed a BayStar Hydraulic Steering System on an older c.1976 15-foot hull? Were there any problems in bolting to an 1994 70-HP OMC motor? I found a six-year-old thread but was wondering if there was any newer information out there. I did find a "SeaStar" installation manual on line but could not find one for BayStar. The clearance needs SEEM to be the same for the two systems.

Thanks.

I thought about going with Baystar hydraulic steering for the second 15 but decided to either keep the cable system I have now or upgrade to Safe-T Quick Connect system at about $125. Steering is effortless on 1982 stock refurb and the 1988 will again utilize a manual jack plate. So little lower unit in the water almost seems Baystar would be overkill. Not too often I need to go hands free in a straight line and expect 1988 to have as little feed back as the 1982. Just got accustom to a $20 clamp on SS suicide knob and I'm set. Hope this helps. How have ya been? zotcha.

Zotcha--I've been good. I haven't used the boat much, she is definetely a "Garage Queen".

I made the mistake of installing an off-brand steering system. It has been stiff since day one. My 13-inch steering wheel makes it even harder. So, I think of overkill, as I always do.

Some pic's for ya.

Very cool. Come to think of it, I'm going to be using a 13" wheel also to keep it out of my lap. A few questions:

1.) On my conversion to center console and short leaning post, I have considered NOT cutting down my side railings by 2", as I did on the 1982. I like the lowered profile of the stock Sport arrangement but feel with the higher center of gravity on the 1988 cc, I may appreciate the stock railing height. Any insight?

2.) I have racked my brain for almost two years now trying to get fuel cell inside console, along with the battery. In October I blew a cell on my Interstate battery, purchased in 2005 as part of the 1982 refurb. Quite impressive, to say the least. Now am considering a large aluminum cell under the leaning post, and losing one cooler. Looking to get 12-15 gallons under there. Are you happy with the location of your fuel cells? Thinking aft is best. Performance considerations more of a concern than convenience.

3.) Have you GPS'ed your top speed running solo with any type of light load? My 1982 Sport had same engine as yours before repowering with the 2005 F60. I believe it had more top end. The 1988 will again be running with manual jack plate and a 2009 F60 new in crate.

The more I think about this, you could add a Bob's 5 in 1 manual jack plate (@ $225 last I checked) and the Teleflex QC (@ $125), do all rigging yourself, come out MUCH cheaper, and a whole lot less weight. Something to consider.

May shoot you some pics. Have a new truck on order. To make room for it I consolidated both Whalers to one garage so they are side by side (sort of) right now. My email is current if Jimh doesn't find this of interest. Michael.

Michael,

1. I did not cut down my railings. I like the extra height. I'm 6'3" so I'll take all I can get.

2. My fuel (2-six. gal. OMC tanks) are both under the seat. That is just about perfectly amidship. My battery is under the console with room for another (troller).

3. My top speed with the 70 is 35.6 (just me, full of fuel). She's only turning 5400 RPM though. I have some additional tuning to do.

I thought about the "plate" but I can't handle one more inch of length for my small (third stall) garage.

Would like to see some pic's.

Thanks.

Thats interesting. I was bumping 58 or 59 rev's, can't remember, without a jack plate with my 70. Quicker out of the hole, quicker to plane, faster response to any trim adjustments at all, and much more violent chine walking characteristics. Can not remember the prop sizes. And I was running a low profile 15 gallon Pate tank under the rear thwart. Perfect conditions and I only weigh 155 lbs..

I've seen 43.5 GPS at 6100 rev's on the Garmin with the F60, but doesn't seem as fast as the old OMC.

I totally understand in regards to the garage measurement. My 1988, on an aluminum trailer requires almost 24 feet or so, then I use a Fulton Swing-Away tongue. Believe it or not, not to fit it in the garage, but to get it in the water! Shallow sloping ramps and 7-10' tide swings.

I'll shoot some pictures of the 82 on alum. bunk trailer vs. 88 BW steel trailer. Its amazing how differently they sit/travel, especially in height. Take care. zot.

I tried to locate a manual for the Baystar hydraulic steering on-line, but I also could not find one. I could only find the manual for the helm pump. Perhaps this is an omission from Teleflex which could be corrected by calling them.

Thanks JimH. I have a call into them.

The more I look, the "BayStar" appeals to me.

Overkill, agreed. But I like that.

Zot,

Looking forward to some pic's.

Two helm pumps only for sale on The Hull Truth. First, new $200 located in my area with a phone number. Second, used 20 hours by Trader Vic, located up in North Carolina, $150, but sounded spoken for yesterday. Trader Vic is a buddy of a member here who had a 15 Sport. Both building a 21 custom Carolina CC. Member here, Shay or Tarbaby, is a great guy who helped me back in 2005. Hope this helps. zot.

I have not installed a Bayflex but I did install an Ultraflex system on my 1986 15' about four years ago. Th engine was a 3 cyl mercury 70hp, there were no problems at all. also I installed a leaning post and center console with an 18 gallon fuel cell and battery in the console.

It would do over 45mph until I installed the 90 ETEC then over 52 mph.

The steering was totally worth it to me.

Some pics of boat:

the album is a little disorganized but you will find the whole process of going from a striper model to the cc. There is another album with pics of the etec installed.

Good luck with the project. Your boat looks nice BTW.
