Saw an interesting 18 Outrage at the dealer today. What was different is that it had what looked like sidepipes on it. I guess they act like a dock guard and it probably makes it easier to climb on board. But, I have never seen these on a Whaler before.

I've seen Whalers with that option before. Usually rescue boats so someone in the water has something to grab onto. Hard to see, but I don't think it had a black or red dot, indicating a commercial grade hull.

Looking closer, spotted a section of dive type ladder in the stern, and a non-standard side grab rail. Maybe it was customized for divers.

Ugly, and a could way to crack a hull.

It's a nice option if you use your boat for scuba diving. Here's a picture of gnr's Guardian 17 with the same option: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh299/GRGO/port.jpg

K Albus/dfmcintyre are correct, used for diving rescue. Blackduck you are correct seems to me you would hit the dock or something with the rails and damaged the boat...

In consideration of Blackducks observation, I wonder if that type of railing is a factory option, and if so, does the factory beef up where the mounting brackets are attached?

It does not look beefed up at the through bolt mounting points you can see two of them in this image.

I had a 13 Alert set up at factory as dive boat and it had the railings outside the hull. I was told that they were for divers to hold on along side. Apparently no hull reinforcement as mounting plates deformed hull. See Cetacea page 28... Clark

What nomenclature does Boston Whaler use for this diver railing?

There are called "Rescue Rails", not "Diver Rail Near Waterline", silly.

In 1994 they were a $540 option for the Outrage 18.
