I am going to replace the original interior on my 1986 Super Sport this winter. Not sure to go with the kits offered by Nautical Lumber or Specialty Marine?? From the pics both seem pretty comparable although tough to see all the details and grades of wood. I have heard good things about Nautical Lumber from members on this site and from the pics the quality looks outstanding. For the cost savings I am also looking at Specialty Marine kit. Has anyone seen both or have additional input they can share before I pull the trigger on one vs. the other. Is the approx $500 savings going to bite me in the stern down the road if I go with Specialty?

Thanks for the help!

Sean

I have a kit from Nauticall and it is pretty much top notch. I also bought a cushion set from Specialty and I got what I paid for. Talk to Mike, he might negotiate.

In person at his shop, I've seen first hand most of the different pieces Mike has produced for different Whaler models and his work is absolutely beautiful and well thought out.

I have only purchased a few small pieces from Mike at this point, but have plans for some new replacement pieces for my Revenge 22 WT in the future. He has been prompt, friendly, and as easy to deal with as anyone I've ever met...

Another thing that impresses me is that his product is hand made, in house, in the Good Old USA....

Another vote for Mike at Nautical Lumber. He uses Sapele Mahogany for all of his interiors which has a much richer red look with a better grain than the standard Philippine (?) you would get from Specialty which has a varing honey yellow color and grain. Beyond having a better looking wood he hand selects each of the boards that go into each kit to make sure the grain in all of the parts is a near match to each other. That goes a long way to giving the entire kit a complete look.

Finally his finishes are out of this world. He encapsulates all of the parts in an epoxy finish first and then sprays them all of many layers of varnish. The end product is near mirror like. The added step of encapsulating the wood with an epoxy goes a long way to helping to preserve the finish and the parts.

If nothing else that fact that Jimh recommends Mike's work and his work along I think speaks volumes.

Another vote for Mike at Nautical Lumber. I have been to his shop and have seen his work. Great attention to detail, high quality wood, a rugged finish and superb workmanship. He also is willing to work with you on any customization.

Mike's the real deal. Just being able to source the wood - correct and high quality lumber he uses is not easy. I've been around wood boat builders for decades including direct involvement with the top white water river boat builder in Oregon. I know the business very well. My cousin is a lumber broker his whole career and also a builder developer in awesome part of Northern Michigan - Boyne City - Petoskey - Traverse City. All this said Mike's skills and products match or exceed just about everything I've ever seen and hang with the master of masters NIls Ericksson who had a spars and masts company in the Bay Area for 30 years. I believe Nils would totally respect Mike's work.

I was just in his shop last Saturday and it is awesome his business, not easy in this market to start-up something new, is growing.

I would not hesitate to order an interior from Mike and pretty much guarantee that if you tried to source the proper lumber yourself you'd have great difficulty and probably spend as much or more in the long run. Having developed a kit bout business for my friend's river boat company many years ago, the advantage of having components properly selected for grain pattern and specific use, cut to exact dimensions, shaped and prepped to fit is a huge HUGE advantage. Moreover, I am always blown away by the amazing quality of the lumber he has in his inventory.

Don't flinch, don't hesitate - referrals from some of the hardcores say it all.

Nautical Lumber is a vendor that is familiar to many and comes highly recommended. Mike's work is first-class. Owners of classic Boston Whaler boats are fortunate to have a resource like Nautical Lumber available for replacement wooden components. Take advantage of it. You will be supporting a local American industry, not third-world imports.

Next time I visit my inlaws in Michigan, I want to meet Mike, see his work, and talk some shop! I know there's still some of my mahogany floating around out there, but it's nigh on to ten years old by now.

I vote for Mike at Nautical Lumber as well. He just finished doing an outstanding custom teak job on my Dauntless 160. My brother-in-law is not only a former BW owner but also owned a specialty woodworking business and he said Mike's work was not only first class but also very difficult.

The images shown above are an example of what makes Specialty's kit what it is. A slightly cheaper alternative to Nautical Lumber.

In the images I can see a lot of what looks to be orange peeled varnish which is a sign of rushed spraying and heavily applied varnish. I know as I had the same orange peel show up in some of my own spraying projects. That is until I understood what I was doing wrong and corrected that.

Mike's finishes are truly mirrored concourse like show quality. This comes from good prep work and a time consuming slow and thoughtful application process that includes many light sprayings with a good cure between coatings. If it is not right he goes back and sands out the imperfections and resprays until it is truly correct.

Here are just some detail shots of his work.

Also in the Specailty kit you see they scab and glue together lumber stock to get the board widths they need (noted in above photo). This is a much cheaper way to get those needed widths and it shows.

All of Mikes parts come for a single piece of lumber stock and you would not have these glue joints in an interior kit of his. This of course means that to get this level of finish you have to invest in quality lumber in the widths you need. That is very costly but, the right way to do it.

For me in the end, a little bit more money gets you a FAR superior product with a truly unbeatable finish.

I bought my 15' whaler this spring. The previous owner refinished the factory wood and it came out beautiful and still looks great. He bought a mahogany front bow hatch because the original plywood was in rough shape. I left my Whaler out in the sun for about 1 month this year, the varnish on the hatch has noticeably deteriorated. I am not sure who the hatch was bought from, but I sure glad the rest of my interior was not done in the same manner. I will probably end up re-varnishing the bow hatch next year.
