My 1973 Outrage did not come with a cooler seat or anything associated with the cooler.

I received a 94qt. Igloo Marine cooler for Christmas and now need to install it properly.

Should I use the "Outrage" style cooler cleats, not the Montauk style cleats?

I have the original "winged" style console.

Is the profile of the front of the console acceptable for the rod holders and cushions that are sold by the various suppliers found on this site?

The only thing wrong with mounting a cooler, is that every time you use the boat the cooler has to go in the same place (you also have to purchase the same size cooler when the one you have goes bad). I would consider just tying it down and nothing permanent. Gives you more choices when you use the boat...

I am really trying to create some extra seating...that is one of the main reasons for the cooler and cushions.

I also am thinking about a stern seat in the future.

It is your choice! My opinion is that using a piece of dry-deck under the cooler and attaching it to the console is better than adding another set of screw holes to the floor for factory style teak cooler bases. Or just use a lot of 5200 and no fasteners on the teak bases....

My topic and questions are posted for specific answers related to the older Outrage and console. What I am looking for is answers to my questions specific to my boat. Right now I am not looking for an opinion about screwing something down to the floor...that isnt my question.

Currently my console is out of the boat while the restoration is underway, so....for a 1973 Outrage 19'

Is there adequate room for the 94 qt. cooler in front of the console based after it is re-installed?

Is the winged console wide enough to handle the rod holders and cushions?

Why are there 2 types of teak floor cleats, and is it the Outrage style of cleats that are needed in my application?

I have a 1984 Outrage 18 which had an original 86 qt cooler and seat in front of the console when I bought the boat. The seat and cooler top was in great shape, but the cooler base was tired. I bought the new style 94 cooler, fitted the old top and seat to the new cooler and trimmed the mahogany cooler cleats that were in the boat to accomadate the new cooler.(These cleats are identical to the ones which were in my 87 Montauk) This allowed me to use the same screw holes into the floor.
There are several sources for new teak cooler cleats. I would imagine they are made to fit the current 94 qt cooler. The cushions over the rod holders are 12 1/4" wide by 12 1/2" tall with a 2 1/2" gap for the rod holders. This does not answer all your questions, but will shed some light on it. I do have a 1976 Whaler brochure and it shows a seat in front of the console. It appears to be a fairly good sized seat.

Most of the 19 Outrages came with the cooler front seat option, based on the Igloo 86Qt cooler, now obsolete and replaced with the 94 qt model. It will fit perfectly.

The original mahogany cooler cleats were a two part affair, designed so that the cooler actually sits on the bottom piece, and does not sit directly on the floor. The bottom piece is rectangular, 1/2" thick, and the top piece is the typical Whaler "dog bone" component, 1" thick, straight at the rear and curving around the cooler at the front.

If you go to my son's "19 Outrage" photobucket site, you can see a detailed photo of this cleat assembly. Three screws hold each of these assmeblies in place.

Incidentally, from what I can determine, the reason for the bottom plate is because the boat's floor seems to have a slight hump in it at the center of the hull. These plates allow the cooler to sit level, and not rock side to side.

Whaler console rod racks will easily fit the console front face.

THANK YOU...now that was the answer I was looking for.

I had previously looked at your Outrage pics and the detailed photo of the cleat and that is what had confused me, I saw that lower piece of wood that the cooler sat on.

The problem I see is that all of the aftermarket cooler cleats, both the Outrage and Montauk styles DO NOT have the 2 piece design. The ones being sold by the custom wood workers are just the "dog bone" design.

I dont want to spend $100 to $109 for a design that wont work for me.

Maybe Mike at Nautical lumber has the correct cooler cleats for the 1970's 19' Outrage??
