[Seeks] any thoughts on Deck [deck?] paint for a 1968 Montauk?

I am not sure what you mean by deck paint. That is an ambiguous term.

If you are looking for a product to repaint you interior I would recommend Awlgrip. They also make a great product for rolling in a new non-skid surface on your deck called grip-tex.

Other have also used Durabak for non skid surfaces with great success.

Here is a great application

I am not familiar with the brand "Deck" as a type of paint. Give us more information about this brand.

There is no such model of Boston Whaler boat as a 1968 MONTAUK. The first MONTAUK model was introduced around 1973.

If you have a 1968 Boston Whaler you probably have a boat whose liner was molded with blue gel coat, and, if so, I presume you are seeking advice about a paint to use in re-coating the deck with a similar blue color. I don't know of a pre-mixed paint that will be an exact match for your boat. When a boat is 43-years-old the colors may be faded, and, if the gel coat does not have a high lustre, it will be hard to assess its real color and match to it.

Jeff gave you good advice about the brand of paint to use: AWLGRIP. This is a modern yacht paint and will give you a beautiful finish, assuming you've properly prepared the deck to receive it. I'd pick a color of blue from the AWLGRIP color chart that is close to your original blue, and go with that as a "match."

Thanks all,

I apologize for not providing more details. Yes, the hull is 1968 and I realize that it's not a Montauk and should have known that I'd get called on that in this site...:) . I generally refer to it as a Montauk as they are called here on the west coast. And yes, I am looking for a quality paint for the floor only and realize that matching the color will not be possible. I just repowered with a Yamaha four stroke 70HP and thought she could use a touch up. I'll give Awlgrip a try!!

Again,

Thank you,

Ron

An alternative to AWLGRIP may be something cheaper, more easily applied, and in more common distribution: KRYLON Fusion for Plastic. See

http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/

The stock Krylon Fusion color Satin Peekaboo Blue might be an acceptable match for the Boston Whaler blue from 1968. I suspect this paint will be easier to apply. I don't know how many 12-ounce cans it would take to cover the interior of a 16-footer. Even if it took ten cans, at only about $7/can the cost would be modest.

jimh, have you or anyone else for that matter painted a boat with rattle can paint. It may work great, may not. I would never recommend something that I have not used or seen used successfully and let that person be the pioneer. Oh well, maybe I`m just a little bit too "old school".

I would not use the spray can either. I would consider paying someone who knows how to spray awlgrip, though if you already have an air compressor that is big enough, you can get a spray gun for relatively cheap.

My nephew painted the interior of his old 13-footer using spray paints, changing it to a brown camouflage from the original blue. I am sure he was not the first.

The inquiry was for "any thoughts on [deck] paint," and I think my suggestion fits into that range of topic.

Checked out nephews Whaler. I`m not sure whether its a misdemeanor or a felony to deface a Whaler like that. Chuck Bennett should press charges.

Richard--That 13-footer has been in the family for decades. You'd have a different opinion if you were eating some ducks shot from that boat. You need to get up to Ontario in the fall and do some duck hunting. Stop trying to hustle old women at the mall.

Jim, not to get off topic, but here in sunny Florida we don`t need to go gunning for ducks. We have our own Muscovy ducks,(leftover from when the Spaniards populated this peninsula. They are everywhere probably a few on my dock now or in my shrubs. No need to shoot them, just walk up to one and whack it with a bat or rake or whatever. OK to eat too, especially during tough economic times. They don`t taste all that good but what duck does, and I don`t have to spit out #6 steel shot, with every other bite. Here is a pic of a nice fat one,

BTW, that is a cool looking camo paint job, just funning with you. LOL

Yeah--I thought the camo-paint was well done. He was only about 16-years-old when he painted it. Now he's in some prestigious business school program. Man, time flies.

Hello All

I'm in the middle of sanding an early 60's 13ft for a repaint with epoxy primer and top coat. I'm waiting for the weather to get a little warmer before doing the glass work. As you can see from the photos in the link, the previous owner cut out the area where the hull meets the gunwale in an attempt to dry out a water logged hull. The boat was metered (sonography) to be 80% dry recently. I will be replacing the drain tubes as well.

I am going to the boat show in Portland, Me this weekend and hope to pick up the primer and top coat. $$$ :)

My question for you folks is how much product do I need to buy to paint the entire hull, inside and out. I want one solid off white color for everything. I have no need to try and match the original blue interior, nor the budget.

My guess was 2 quarts(1/2 gallon) of epoxy primer and 2 quarts of top coat. Again this is for inside and out.

Thank you

-Nick

I just repainted my 1963 13ft whaler with the 2 part epoxy primer(2 quarts) and 1 qt of Perfection for final paint(sprayed) for the outside. Although the Perfection brand looks good, its a PITA to paint with a cyanide based paint when you are spraying it.

I am redoing the inside now and have used 1 qt unthinned 1 part Pre-Kote(name brand) primer, but I will need one more qt to propoerly cover everything(rolled/brushed). I have 1 qt Brightside for the final paint, and Im not sure that will be enough. You can only thin 10%, so I would probably say 2 gts each for primer and final paint.

Im no expert....So use my info as a reference, and listen to all that is said on here as these guys are the experts.

BTW, the Primer was around $38 a can, and the Perfection was $80 with the special thinner another $20.

The inside deck has enough built in grip that I feel I do not need anymore non-slip paint.
