I advise you to read the owner's manual for your outboard engine, where you should find the recommendation for battery capacity given. My anecdotal recollection is that Mercury Optimax outboard motors require very high-capacity batteries and those batteries need to be kept extremely well charged. This is due to the high electrical demands of the Mercury Optimax outboard motor during engine starting, where the storage battery has to supply all the electrical energy for the engine's electrical system, the engine control unit, the fuel injectors, the air injectors, the ignition spark generation, and, of course, the electric starter motor trying to crank over the engine. The presences of electronic controls with embedded software often adds additional requirements for stability of the voltage, as these devices may not operate correctly if the supply voltage drops out of the normal range. If you need advice on what types of batteries and what brands are preferred, please begin anew in the SMALL BOAT ELECTRICAL discussion, which focuses on the electrical and electronic systems and components of small boats. |
