I am thinking about changing my bow eye on my 1987 Outrage 18 from the single rod type to the now standard u-bolt eye. Has any one removed the bow eye on this vintage boat know how long the rod is that goes trough the stem? Con |

Why? The bow eye screws together, but why do you want to change it, you would have to fill the hole and then drill two new ones? again why? |

Why? To get a bigger eye, so I can hook winch strap and tie down strap into eye. Stronger, will not flex and break caulk seal when under load. Con |

Check out: general area, winch. ConB: You do not have to go to that extreme, use a screw shackle or a carabiner in the bow eye hook. I have a 17 that has two shackles in the bow eye and I leave them there, One I use for the winch hook and the other for a trailer tie down... |

I entertained trying to replace the D Ring bow with a bigger U bolt type on my Montauk. Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to find one long enough to make it through the hull to the top side because of the thickness, which was more than 7 1/2" I believe. I guess most boats aren't that thick up front ;). I would think the Outrage would be similar. There is someone who has done this, bottomfish, but he had to get a special U-bolt welded to go long enough, you can see his project page over at whalercentral.com to see it. |

I was in the exact same "boat". 1988 18 Outrage and I couldn't get my bow tie down in with that fat cast winch hook! I even tried grinding it down some. It would fit enough to get jammed. Went to local Whaler guy. They could do it. The eye that would fit was 1/2" SS. Looked HUGE!!! Problem solved.

FISHNFF, does your boat have a U-bolt eye or an eye that has a single bolt going through the hull? Con |

Con - consider taking your existing bow eye to a welding shop and have them cut off the existing eye and welding on a larger one of stainless steel. ---- Jerry/Idaho |

Con, I have the single through bolt to the cast triangular eye. The eye is screwed on, not welded. Replacing the cast winch strap hook with a SS caribiner is the way to go. FISHNFF |
