I am looking for advice on regluing my keel guard. It has come loose on the edges of a small area where the sharpest bend in the keel occurs. The two areas needing regluing are 3-4 inches long, and are still adhered to the center part of the keel. I am thinking 3M 5200 might be too much? Any suggestions would be appreciated-k |

Try calling Keel Guard directly http://www.keelguard.com . They should know best. I've found them good to deal with and very responsive to inquiries. And, it's Toll Free: 800.292.9835 |

Menemsha: If you have pondered the idea of placing a keel protector on your whaler why would you not want to use the best adhesive to keep it on the hull? If I made a decision to put one on my whaler I would not want it to come off. I would use the 3m 5200 and probably the fast cure while I held it in place, so I knew it made a good seal. After it dries I would go back and make sure the edges are filled in as well. As Lakeside stated I would contact the company and ask for the best adhesive....PS I know it would be a lot of work but if you wanted it off you could use a grinder, and make the repairs back to factory...Good luck |

I called the company and they had a list of products they recommended, all two-part epoxies made specifically for plastic. I think the one I used was from Devcon, called "Plastic Welder." It worked well, but it's hands-down the nastiest smelling product I've ever come across. Use it outdoors if you can... Tim |

I just realized I have the same issue with my keel guard. Rather disappointed that it is coming off. (However, mine is peeling at a foward keel roller location.) |

Keel rollers and Keel Guards do not get along. That is why the instructions that come with the Keel Guard recommend against their use with keel roller trailers. |

Not even keel rollers...mine was resting a bit on my lift I-beam and pealed off. They can NOT rest on rollers or ANYTHING. It was dragging in the water so I cut off the half that came unglued. They sent me a brand new ones sans $$. |

Looks like I'll go with the 5200, and use it sparingly. I'm concerned about when it's time to replace the keel guard, and taking gelcoat with it. Epoxies will work I'm sure, but maybe too well! Thanks for the replies!-k |

Mine has been fine. I did not follow the CW instructions. It ends at the bow eye. I can tell you that 5200 sticks VERY well. It will peel the hull before the adhesive lets go. Of course, it has to be dry first. Don't think about applying it where water is present. |

If you want it to come off someday, use 4200, not 5200. 5200 is considered permanent. |
