I’m looking for an anti-fouling bottom paint that closely matches the Outrage Gray of my 1973 Sport 13. Is there an Interlux or Pettit stock color that is close? I need anti-fouling paint but do not want to use a contrasting color like blue or black that will break up the clean looking lines of my classic 13-foot hull. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks,
BobL

Pettit Vivid White is a close match.

If Pettit Vivid White is not close enough, you can you the color matching technique I describe here:

Tom,

Can you give us an update on how well the color match held up over the last three years?

I may have to do the same some day soon to my 18'.

George -- I have not seen the boat since it went up to the islands. I'll have John (the current owner) take some photos of the bottom and post them.

Bob -- The correct name of your gel coat color is Outrage Grey, not Outrage Gray. Spectrum color (confusingly) calls this color "1972 - 1984, Lt. Grey, Boston Whaler"

Spectrum did not even come close on the match for the grey. I sent mine back in exchange for desert tan which matched perfectly for the interior. What does match the grey perfectly is Tempo Evinrude white from 1971-77. Not sure if even made anymore due to Tempo getting bought out/gone bust. My friend has had the Vivid White on his 23 SeaCraft for about 5 years and it is STILL white, not yellow or brown or green...WHITE. When I run out of navy on my 13' it is getting the Vivid with a thin boot stripe to seperate them.

Tom,
Your color matching technique is very clever. I didn’t realize that the universal colorants would be compatible with bottom paints. I’ll start with the Pettit Vivid White, find a color fan-deck that matches my faded Outrage Grey, and convince the paint dealer to tint it or sell me the colorants.
I hate putting bottom paint on a hull that has been bare for thirty-eight years but there is no way around it. At least the clean lines of the hull will remain intact. Thanks for the help.

The spelling variation gray or grey is a regional variation, something like color or colour. In the USA the current modern spelling is more often gray, and in Bonnie Old England perhaps more often grey. I suppose if there were a specific paint made by a specific manufacturer one could say the color's name was spelled a certain way, but I don't know that anyone has trademarked the name OUTRAGE GRAY or OUTRAGE GREY. As far as I am concerned they are equivalent.

Tom's use of color paint chips to obtain a color match to the hull color is a good idea. I had the same idea and wrote about it in 1998. See:

http://continuouswave.com/maintenance-logs/epoxy/

and the paragraph under the sub-heading "Martha Stewart to the Rescue." You know what they say about great minds.

The words gray and grey mean the same thing and both spelling are acceptable.

However, OUTRAGE GREY is a name, a proper noun to be precise, and as such there is only one correct way to spell it.

Well Guy Couch yachts are pronounced Gee Quash like Gee as in McGee and Quash like in squash....go figure. So next time you are being entertained on the neighbors 3 million dollar yacht make sure you pronounce it correctly and you might get asked back.

Darn it...Guy Couach. Learn to spell it correctly as well.

Yeah--And fancy yachts like that are moored to the quay, not the wharf.
