I just purchased a new Yamaha F90. My previous engine was a 1996 Evinrude 70-HP. I am planning on getting the following parts: Yamaha multi function gauge, new binnacle control, cables, new propeller, Yamaha key switch. Does the [Yamaha multi-function] gauge come with the wiring harness needed that runs back to the engine? Or do I need to purchase it seperately? Can I use the existing [Teleflex steering] cable with the Yamaha? Are the mounting bracket holes the same [on the Yamaha F90 as they were on the 1996 Evinrude]? Or different? Thanks, Jeff |

The engine mounting bracket dimensions have been standardized for many years, beginning in about 1984. See http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q8 It is most likely that the engine mounting bracket on a new Yamaha F90 will have the same hole layout and dimensions as on your 1996 Evinrude engine |

In most cases the steering actuator is connected to the engine tiller by a drag link. When you get a new engine that is intended to be installed with remote steering the engine will typically include a drag link. This new drag link will be of the proper dimensions to connect the engine tiller to the steering actuator. |

There ought to be some on-line reference published by Yamaha which will show you precisely what accessories are included in what packages. I imagine that you can buy the Yamaha multi-function gauge as just the gauge (in order to have a replacement gauge) or perhaps bundled with other components. Often when a manufacturer offers a bundle of components the price of the bundle will be less than the price of the individual components. Work with the dealer you are buying to determine exactly what you get when you buy a particular accessory. No matter what advice you receive here about what someone thinks you will get when you buy a particular item, the only authoritative source about what you are going to get is the dealer selling you the item. |

Hookup, you don't mention whether you're going to be getting a CommandLink multifunction gauge, or the older analog type. I would strongly recommend the former, as it will be more versatile - you can even hook up a [unclear, perhaps means a NMEA-2000 compatible multi-function display device] to the motor and pull lots of helpful info out of the motor's computer. In fact, having done this last year, if I were to do it over again I'd probably skip the multifunction tach entirely and just go with the [unclear, perhaps means a NMEA-2000 compatible multi-function display device] the gauge is redundant. If you do go with CommandLink, the parts are all a la carte - that is, you buy gauge and connecting parts separately. Among other things, this will let you get the right length cables for your particular situation. I got all my parts after corresponding with Andy Munao from SimYamaha (www.simyamaha.com) - I would strongly recommend them. Also, my Teleflex steering hooked up easily to my F70. Tim |

just finished the F90 repower on a 1986 Montauk that had an 86 Johnson 70 on it originally - Andy Munao at Shipyard is a terrific guy and was a life saver for me. The majot issue I had is that the Johnson's lower mounting holes did not match the Yamaha so we had to fill and drill - your newer motor should not have that issue. I went with the complete Yamaha rigging package - binnacle, electronic multifunction speedo & tach, ignition switch and it all was plug and play. Good luck with your repower - I am pretty happy with mine so far. |
