Gents--I am working on hull repairs to my 1975 Newport this year. Based on searches on this site, it seems that the hull outer color is Light Gray and the cockpit color is Desert Tan.

Can anyone confirm this is the real story? Looking to confirm BEFORE I order gel coat supplies.

Thanks!

Yes, those are the correct colors. That said unless you are doing the entire interior and exterior of your hull I would not buy your gelcoat from spectrum nor mini craft as their light gray is not even close to what is likely on your Whaler and their desert tan for my 1976 Newport was way off as well.

Last Fall did repairs to my hull and instead of buying and trying to correct the spectrum color again I went to my local fiberglass shop and bought a quart of pure white gelcoat, about 3 variations of their tan and light grey color agents to mix the quart exactly to my color needs and all of my thinners, hardeners and finish waxes. Out the door for every thing I paid $38. It was easy to mix my own colors to get what I needed. Which because the spectrum and minicraft colors are so off your would have to do anyway.

Outrage Grey is the exterior color of a 1975 Newport.

Light Gray is what Spectum Color calls Outrage Grey.

Good luck on the Spectrum gray matching. Was not even close on mine. Their desert tan seems to be good. A perfect match is Tempo Evinrude/Johnson 1971-76 spray paint if you can find it.

Tom--Does that confirm that my 1975 hull is NOT Desert Tan?

I have looked at your CD collection and there is a definite color change to hull exteriors in the 1976 model year, right.

Thanks!

Spectrum and Mincraft's prices are through the roof too. They are more than double that of www.expresscomposites.com.

All the 16'7" hulls from 1973 (may be 1972) up to 1984 had the Outrage Gray (Light Gray) exterior with the Desert Tan interior.

There was no hull color changes in 1976. The exterior was Outrage Grey (not Gray), the interior was Desert Tan (not Dessert Tan)

Tom,

After reviewing Whaler's catalogs from your CD set, Whaler used both spellings in the past. Gray and Grey. I was taught way back that America spells it Gray and England spells it Grey....

I've never seen Whaler spell it any way but Outrage Grey.

The words gray and grey are both acceptable in the US, the former is much, much more common.

However, we are not talking about an adjective, we are talking about a proper noun. Whaler coined the name 40 years ago. Take it up with them.
