I have a simple question that I can not find an answer: what is the recomended length of throttle and shift cables for a classic [1987] Montauk? Thanks--Chip

There is no "recommended" length (except don't go too long or too short). My 1985 Montauk originally came rigged with 16 foot cables; these provide a big loop of excess cable. I'm currently running 14 foot cables which is about as short as you can reasonably use. I like the minimal amount of clutter the 14 foot cables give.

So the quick answer is probably this: use 14, 15 or 16 foot control cables, depending upon your preference for excess.

It really depends on how you plan to route the cables.

I've seen some guys just run the cable out of the rigging tunnel and up and over the splashwell straight to the motor. I think that is a poor arrangement.

My preferred route would be to keep the control cables along the steering cable and run them under the motor past the motor to Port and then make a big loop back to the motor. This allows the motor to pivot without the cable being bent or dragged across the front of the splashwell. It also keeps them more out of the way

I should add that if you want to make a proper loop, you will need 20' cables.

The 16 foot cables give a good loop and I used to have that loop arranged as Tom points out. I think 20 foot cables would be a bit too long; excessive extra cable is not recommended by Teleflex as it causes a bit of play in the system.

The 14 foot cables may be a little short for some but as I have changed over to hydraulic steering I don't have the steering cable sticking out across the starboard side of the transom and don't need to have the control cables there either.

I recently bought cables and controls Teleflex dual stations. There were several different types of cables to choose from. I needed one set to make a tight loop in a confined area. Sorry I dont have the exact model number that work great, reciept is around here somewhere... point is, different types of Teleflex cables have different capabilities.

Might be the reason Tom recommends 20's and Crabby says 16s work fine. I tested my cables at the store by removing the cables from the box, resembling the tight loop and pulling the ends in and out by hand. Make sure you have the CORRECT end connectors before you leave the store.
