Just put a 150 Optimax on my 21 foot Trophy Bayliner. The used motor had 600 hours on it. On the first trip out it worked well for the first 12 miles. It was wavy and the motor was working hard....it started to crap out and I slowed down then put it into neutral....after 10 min. of idling I took off again and it did well for the next 16 miles. When I returned to the Marina it was quite windy and the motor did the same thing 4 X. The motor always sounded good when I shut it down to idling and it always worked well getting it onto plane....it seemed to be an issue that developed after working hard for several minutes. Has anyone had this experience with this motor. Any ideas>
Thanks
Gary

Check the vent for the fuel tank. Your symptoms read as a possible closed/blocked vent.

Check the vent hose too. It could collapse also and after a while it would cause your symptom's.

On my Mercury 125 2+2 The motor would run about a mile and shut down.
I went back the other direction and it died where I started. Did that experiment afew times and found a problem with the nozzle going out of the fuel tank. It had a ball bearing and a spring inside the nozzle, replaced that and all was good.

It is most likely some kind of fuel delivery issue. Could be vent, could be fuel hose, primer bulb, etc.

To diagnose, run the engine off of a 6 gallon portable tank using a fuel hose assembly you know to be good.

If it works fine, then start looking at the fuel system on the boat for issues.

Is the primer bulb collapsing? If so, put in a new bulb. After it dies, can you fix the problem by opening the fuel fill. If so check you vent lines. etc., etc.

You also have an "anti siphon" valve on the tank. They are usually part of the outlet fitting.

If they stick, they can cause a fuerl delivery issue. You can remove them for testing.
