I need to install new white rubber window gaskets in my 1964 Eastport. I have the new gasket material and the windows out, and now I have a few questions:

Is there any reason to put some kind of silicone caulking in the frames prior to putting in the glass? I don't know why I'd want to do that, but whomever had the glass out last put it back in with silicone caulk, with the rubber gasket on top of that. I'd think the white rubber gaskets would be sufficient to hold the glass in without help.

Is there some sort of trick I should employ in installing these gaskets? The rubber is very reluctant to go into its groove, and I can see a days-long wrestling match with this stuff.

Thanks in advance. Toby

Move to REPAIRS/MODS. Please us REPAIRS/MODS to solicit advice on making repairs or modifications to classic Boston Whaler boats.

Silicone caulk is a common glazing adhesive. My guess is in the previous installation the rubber gasket did not provide a strong enough interference fit. The silicone caulk would have helped hold the rubber gasket in place.
