First I would like to know if the information I received directly from Mercury is accurate. I contacted them reference replacing fuel hoses and I mentioned "obviously" the year make and model with a somewhat condescending tone. The response was " that particular year and hp was not part of the problematic optimax motors" advising they were higher hp and newer models, I think 01,02. Gentlemen is this an accurate statement ?? Ok now the issue I have, I'm replacing a engine oil reservoir due to poor threads on the bottle, causing leakage. I assume someone over tightened it prior to my ownership. If I pinch the lines removed and refill the new bottle I was told to run the motor with cap off to vent any air trapped. Is this going to work? Yes this is the small bottle on the motor. 3rd ? The starter works most of the time but on occasion the bendix spins ?? but does not lift up to engage the flywheel. Out comes the screwdriver to manually lift it and off to the races. Any ideas ?? Thankyou for your help. By the way the motors have approx 250 hrs on a 1999 23 conquest. Chris

Since your engine is soon to be 13 years old I would not worry if it was a "problematic" or what we refer to as an Optibomb or Opticrap model. It is obviously a good one to last 13 years but I know the early low hp were the problem mainly the 150's. As far as the cap on the oil res. goes, have you tried teflon tape? If you do put on a new bottle, run on muffs for say 15-20mins with cap off or lose to vent any air trapped. Should be good to go after that. |

Listening to Nick talk about Mercury engines is like listening to me talk about all of the problems, including salt water corrosion, on Suzuki outboards. |

Tohsgib, yes I have teflon tape on now and it appears to be working, but I prefer not to use the bandaid approach on these motors !! |

Once a year I oil the top of the starters on my 1999 225 Mercury Optimax. I use chain saw bar oil. It clings to what ever you put/want it on. Have yet to have a starter fail to engage. Norm |

Starter problem is usually a ground. Larry...even Mercury knows the early 150's were bombs. No way to dance around that matter. The early Fichts were just as bad. Seems like both companies finally figured out how to make it dependable...unfortunately one of them went bankrupt doing so. |
