I need to replace the steering sytem on my 1984 Montauk. I am trying to decide between the Teleflex NFB Safe-T II system and the NFB 4.2. I understand there is a difference of 3 to 4 turns for the 4.2 but not sure if that is really an advantage on a Montauk with a 90-HP Evinrude. It's probably not really hard to turn, anyway, and either sytem will probably be a big improvement over my 25-year-old system. What about the snap-in cable design of the Safe-T system? Is it really a lot easier to install? And what about the Lube II system to keep the steering rod lubricated? Any thoughts? Thanks.

You want the Teleflex NFB Safe-T II steering system (3 turns lock-to-lock) not the Teleflex NFB 4.2 (4.2 turns lock-to-lock).

Aside: It would be a lot less confusing if Teleflex used better product names like NFB 3.0 instead of NFB Safe-T II, which plays on the historic success of the their old Safe-T and Big-T helms.

I find the 4.2 system to be too slow in response, though they are a lot snappier than the glacially slow BayStar hydraulic systems at 5.0 turns lock-to-lock.

But [the decision of a helm] is a personal choice. Do you like driving a bus or a sports car?

Tom, that is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much for your response.
