What pigment should I use for gel coat, acrylic-base or glycol-base? I'm going tint white gel coat to match my deck color. Which color pigments should I purchase? Yellow? Black? Brown? [The] boat [whose current laminate color is to be matched] is a late c.1980 classic 15-footer, with what I believe is [Desert Tan gel coat]. Thanks

I have tinted pure white gel coat using acrylic artist pigment. I used a small amount of RAW SIENNA mixed with pure white gel coat to create a pigment, which I then used with a higher volume of pure white gel coat to create a decent color match for the hull color of my 1976 Boston Whaler SPORT 15, whose hull is also tinted DESERT TAN, as far as I know.

I don't know how you could tell what shade the color was in tints just called BROWN and YELLOW. Usually color tints have more precise color names.

Also, look more closely at the gel coat color of the deck. I believe that you may find the deck color is different from the hull color. The change in hue is subtle, and you may not notice it unless you have very good lighting.

Thanks for the info, yes the hull color is different than the deck color,i read a post here where T.Clark had bottom Paint tinted to Benjiman Moore's Clay Beige, but its not a very good match for me(my deck looks like it has a yellowish green tinge to it compared to the cay beige).I rented a fan deck from b.m. today and will try and find something closer to my needs.

The local paint store here has been very helpfull, they tinted some KiwiGrip for me rescently free of charge which turned out just great. The origional non skid was worn down pretty bad in places,The Kiwi grip went right over the old.

I Purchased some off white waxed isophthalic resin based gel-coat made by Fiber-Tek and did some small repairs with it.It works well and has a good shine to it after wet sanding. The color is way off but just wanted to see how it turns out as i never worked with gel-coat before.
Now i'm ready to have some white gel coat tinted to match my deck, the paint store is willing to tint it for me,they just arent sure which pigment base to use so thats why i came here.I still may end up purchasing the pigments from Fiber-Tek aswell if i can't find a good color match with the fan deck. The pigment colors offered here are pretty basic.

I only just purchased my whaler 3 months ago and am finding its next to impossible to find most of the products mentioned here by other whaler owners, its a total nightmare trying to get anything to Canada.I was hoping to get my hands on some spectrum Patch Paste for repairs but that aint gonna happen so i am using 3M Premium Marine Filler. I also wanna make my whaler into a center console but feel i will have to have a fiberglass console and seat shipped into Wash. State, drive across the border to pick them up( that will hopefully happen this winter).

Thanks again for any suggestions

I have had gelcoat tested a Home Depot and bought red, yellow and black tint from their mixing maching. Takes a few tries but mostly yellow, several drops of red and 1 drop black in pure white gelcoat worked.

Sounds like the formula for RAW SIENNA.

I'm willing to try your Raw Sienna method aswell, hopefully i can find some, fingers crossed.

After work today i wipped out the fan deck from Benjiman moore and it looks like Florentine Plaster CC-520 is a perfect match.I will double check it again tomorrow but man i think its bang on.Only time will tell though after the tinting process, application, sanding buffing etc.
I plan on using a prevel sprayer.
