HI Folks,

Potential Whaler owner in the works. I'm looking at a mid 1970s' 17 Montauk that looks real good overall. Has been trailered, and aparrenly garaged most of it's life. Only area of concern I saw was these cracks at both ends of the transom. They appear to be only in the gelcoat, and not open, but looking for some feedback from folks.

I did give the outboard a push/pull while in down position and the transom feel solid. Should I be concerned?

Thanks, Tom

1st Your picture did not come out, 2nd A whaler this old will have gel-coat cracks it just the years taking the toll. However without a picture of the transom, I would like to see the cracks and how and were they are....

The picture can be seen at https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ _dtofLhwZCEprbTZ84AI16imHsRkBeqfbx85v1DPoqM?feat=directlink .

I wouldn't be concerned by those minor cracks in the surface.

Hey,Tom. Those cracks are nothing to worry about. Whats the motor and price? Been thinking about a Montauk, I live in MA. So, don't let me steel it from you,If the price is right, buy it.

Agreed, just cosmetic.

I would tend to agree with most here that they are likley cosmetic in nature. But, they could also be an indication of a stressed transom during a bottom strike sometime in the hull's life.

If these were on a boat I was "considering" buying I would certainly not "FORGETABOUTIT" when if comes to making a decision on an offer.

Read his post again...these are the ONLY area of concern he found. Use it as a negotiation tool or use it to not buy the boat but whatever you use it as they are strictly cosmetic so FORGETABOUTIT!
