This weekend while skiing [apparently behind a boat with a 2001 Yamaha Ox66 outboard engine, its] remote oil tank ran out, causing the low oil alarm to sound. I refilled the tank. Now it won't send oil to the secondary tank located on the engine. I cannot find [a prime switch] on this 2001 200HP Ox66. Any ideas? Thanks,

Did you pump the primer bulb for the oil tank to get the air out of the line? Also the filter in the oil tank comes and gets clogged you have to and need to clean it. Make sure the float is working otherwise it will shut the pump down. The best thing to do is clean the oil filter in the tank and the one inside the engine reservoir tank as well. Is your oil pump working on the remote tank? The last would be the oil pump on the engine just before the carburetors. Undo the lines and remove it. The back side needs lubrication and you can blow the passages out with compress air. It really sounds like you just have a clog on one of the filters or oil lines. Good luck

I cannot locate a primer bulb to squeeze. Do you happen to know where it's located? My older engine had a switch mounted directly on the engine to prime. I'm almost sure there is air in the lines due to running it dry.

Boat runs fine if I add oil to the tank on the motor.

Yamaha's systems do not have primer bulbs-most larger engines have a switch just below the flywheel on the rear of the engine block to fill the small on-engine tank from the remote tank.

At looking thru on-line parts diagrams, it appears that my motor is an 2000. I do not see a switch located on the engine that would prime the oil pump.

The primer bulb should be within one foot of the large oil tank. It sucks up the oil and pushes it to the engine to get the oil pump started. Check the screen filter inside the tank needs to be clean for the pick up. There may also be an in-line valve and filter. Need to check your oil line for one of these. [Check for] air in the line. Your oil float is it working? It could be sending a false message. Your oil pump has died. They are durable. May not be this unless it has just rusted out. Is you tank getting power to run the oil pump? Also bad connection? If the tank is out of the boat, whereas you can still connect it. listen to it. See if it runs. Since the engine is running fine on the small tank under the cowling it has to be one of the things I have listed. There just is not a lot of things with the oil tank. Good luck

The oil switch looks like a toggle switch that should be to the left of the oil tank that is on the motor. When you flip the switch you should hear a faint motor running. The oil tank on the engine itself dictates how much oil it needs. If it is low, it has the remote oil tank add oil. Real simple.

I would also check the plug that goes from the motor to the tank. Make sure it is plugged in and not corroded.

On mine I was replacing the oil filter located under the tank and found the bracket rusted-out. Cheapest way to fix all was to buy a remote rigging tank setup from SimYamaha. The entire kit--remote tank, pump, filters, new hoses, etc.--was $212. Yamaha wanted more [for] replacement parts. New tank in, connected all, and happy day.

Another source for a replacement remote oil tank bracket which is lower in purchase price than a replacement OEM and appears to be better suited for the environment is made by Artecindustries. No affiliation but I do know folks have used their hold down bracket and are happy.

Ok good to know. Originally all I was doing was replacing the oil tank filter. So I try to unscrew the latch on top and didnt need a screw driver. Rusted heavily and snapped right off. When I went on-line to get some prices for the bracket alone, I just about fell off the chair. That's when the rigging kit caught my eye. Less money and the entire setup is new! If the bracket were cheaper and preferably made of Aluminum I would highly consider that.

It is very likely that the source of your problem is as simple as a clogged strainer filter located just outside the remote oil tank. You can easily verify if the remote oil pump is working or getting the proper voltage with a multimeter. If so, the strainer is the likely culprit, especially if in the 11 years of its life, it has never been changed--a $10-part.

I have a new filter on the way and will do more testing when it arrives. I do not think I have a switch on this engine to pull oil from the remote tank. If I do, it's well hidden.

Look on the side of your ECU on the back of the motor. It may have a grey weatherproof boot over the toggle switch.

Looking at the parts diagram online, it does not list a toggle switch or "switch assembly" as it is referred to in other similar OX66 models. The switch assembly is specifically called out on other models, including the 3.1L models of that vintage. Wonder if there is something special about the 2000 year 200 HP OX66 models.

IF your toggle switch is not attached to the ECU, then look at the forward facing side of the engine oil tank near the top. It may be attached to a tab on the tank.

The 2000's look on the black cover in between the two cylinder heads. There should be a switch on the leftish side of the black cover (switch is probably tan)

That should be the oil pump switch.

Take a look at... boats.net, 2000 SX200TXRY and click on electric 1. The ECU cover will show a switch assembly.

Otherwise on other OX66 motors, the oil switch is located to the left of the oil tank on the motor.

BTW, the ignition switch will need to be in the ON position for the pump to work.
