My 1996 Outrage 20 with a Mercury 175-HP is stored an hour away from my house. I need to replace [the water pump] impeller on the Mercury, address some corrosion on the lower unit, and repaint the gear case. Can I pull the gear case, take it home for the winter to do this work, and then reinstall it in the Spring? If I wrap the end of the outboard in plastic and tape it will that be adequate? I need an opinion. Thanks--Dan

Yes, you can go and retrieve the lower unit off the motor and do all your needed work on it over the winter. While wrapping the end of the motor is a nice protective step, it's also not truly necessary.

I would cover it, just to protect it from something wanting to crawl up in it and just to keep the dirt out.

Had one of my lower units off all winter last year. She was stored outside in MN. I did cover the end of the unit with a plastic bag just to keep things out. No [problems] at all.

Thanks Everyone...when I go up to winterize it, I will pull it off!

Just make sure that water can't accumulate in the bag. A
little hole at the bottom will let it out.

Chuck is correct, you need to put a little hole in the bottom of the bag to let the water drain.
