Hey all,As it is that time of year, going over the wish list for next season. I have a 91 22' Outrage and hoping to upgrade the two speakers I have onboard, tucked under the gunnels on the left and right of the console in a small starboard enclosure with speaker cut out. Didn't take measurements as I didn't anticipate looking for a new pair. Seeing if anyone has a similar set-up and if they happen to know the measurements off-hand to fit under the gunnels from previous project/replacement etc. Appreciate any help and happy holidays to all of CW Fin

By upgrading do you mean LOUDER? At least in cars you can roll the windows up, so folks a mile away don't have to listen to someone else's music. |

I installed 6 ½ inch speakers in those side covers when I bought my 1990 Outrage 22 new. I’ve had to replace them twice over the years due to degradation from weather, as my boat is on davits in Florida. The key is to get good quality outside speakers. Additionally, I have some small good speakers installed in the back of my T-top electrical box and that works great for when you are running in the ocean. Bottom line, if you are not into booming bass, which I’m not, smaller speakers work just fine. |

I don't fall into the category of playing obnoxiously loud music for all to endure. My reason for posting the ? is that the speakers I have currently on the boat are degraded and no longer function, and the boat is shrinkwrapped/on stands so I cannot access it until the spring to take measurements. Just trying to size up a DYI job with a project maybe some here on CW have completed before and may possibly have the measurements I could use to determine the right size speaker to fit in the housing that I'm assuming is original to the model. Capt.Brent appreciate the input, I tried to size up 6 1/2 marine speakers that I purchased last year however the magnet on the back was too large and deep to fit flush in the housing. By chance do you remember the speaker brand or model you used? Thanks Fin |

Fin, I just measured the distance (free space) between the cover and the inside of the boat hull. It is 2 3/4 inches. I believe the longest lasting speakers that I used were Advent's (not what is installed now). As I remember I got over 8 years out of them and the cone was still good, but the frame was rusting. So do your research and let me know. I need to do a replacement in '12 myself. |

I would stick with the 6.5 round speakers, every place has them, easy to replace, and you can spend $20 to $200 depending on what you want.. |

I recommend you forget loudspeakers. In general I find loudspeakers and boats are not a good mix. I recommend you get ear bud style earphones. |

Jim: I do not know if it matters, But down in Fla. its against the law to wear ear phone while driving, If this person had an accident I think any attorney would/could make a case of this, wearing ear phones while driving, boat or car... |
