Last time we weren't able to make the turn with the steering cable from the side console channel--the area in between the hull and the mahogany side boards--to under the console. I don't remember if the cable just wasn't flexible enough or what, but we ended up just running it under the seat to the console. Fast forward a few years and the steering is shot so it [is] time to replace it with a new cable. If possible I would like to run [the new cable] in that channel this time. How were you able to do it?
[Although not asked in the article, this author is also seeking information about the recommended length of the mechanical steering cable which other 13-foot Boston Whaler boaters have used, particularly with Teleflex steering components.--jimh]

I had to make one of the holes slightly oval. Not much, but enough to allow the cable to run with a reasonable bend.

Gage is correct, the hole in the side board (between the hull and console) needs to be a long oval ( 1 inch by about 3 with rounded ends) It also helps to build your console wider than normal and offset the steering helm to the center of the boat more. The older 13 whaler consoles were just not really designed to handle the teleflex steering helm, so you have to modify it some. Good luck

I am about to replace my cable on my 1989 side console 13. The old rotary cable is 9 feet long.

I have a new, unused 9' Teleflex steering cable. It was too short for my modified console (wider). New price was $103. Will sell for $70 in original packaging.
