After it was run for about 15 minutes, my 1979 Johnson 85-HP quit running and would not start. [The engine speed was] 3,800-RPM when it quit. [I] checked fuel. [I] even tried starter fuild. [I] used a pull rope, and nada. When [the boat was] towed back to dock [I] checked the owner's manual. [The owner's manual] had a different picture [of the choke compared to] what my 1979 Johnson 85-HP outboard engine has on it. My outboard engine has a red lever with the fuel line connected with twp small lines running back to the carburetor.

[W]hat can [I] check to figure out what's wrong.[?] Thanks in advance--Budana

Sorry but not where you are looking. Either powerpack (90%) or a bad key or a bad kill switch. Nothing will shut it down like that besides electrical. Keep us posted please.

Goes to show ya that just because you "can" pull start an outboard does NOT mean you get home.

Happy New Year!!

Electrical problems typically have a very sudden onset.

Check for spark, check for compression, check for fuel. That will tell you where to start. Electrical sounds likely.

Check your kill switch circut and the plug where the motor connects with the wiring harness. For me quick and dead is usually something simple. Running erratic will drive you nuts finding the problem.

My advice after growing up with the same motor.

Get yourself a can of ether, and get rid of the Johnson/Evinrude Fuel fittings.
