Have a problem that has me baffled. [Later reveals the problem was due to broken wires.--jimh] Worked on it all day. On my 1988 18 Outrage, my bow lights went out. Well actually the starboard green would go on only after playing with switch. Opened my starboard (green) light, and found a cracked base, corroded bulb, and some water intrusion. I ordered a new set of lights from SpecialtyMarine, and installed them. (Not OEM quality) Still nothing works. Replaced 3 position Cole Hershey switch. Nothing. Found a blown fuse. Bypassed all the glass ACG fuses below the panel switches and ran wires to Blue Seas Fuse Panel. Fuse kept blowing. Found a short in the wires at the center console all around light. The wires came out of the bottom of the sliding aluminum pole and was affixed with electrical tape and a SS hose clamp at the bottom (is this factory correct?). Fixed. No blown fuse, but still nothing. I checked with voltmeter that power is going through the switch to the appropriate wires. No lights. All bulbs are good. I am going to work tomorrow, and will revisit on Tuesday. Any ideas? FISHNFF |

Check the wires running behind the rubrail, especially where they exit the hull and make the turn to go along the rail. Mine were cracked and corroded there. Dave |

The wires or the connectors may be bad. You can see voltage with a voltmeter if only a single strand of wire is passing current but that may not be sufficient current to actually light up a lamp. |

Check behind to access panel on the starboard side of the boat by the center console. My 18 Outrage had a bad connection to the front lights there. |

The wire from the fuse panel to the switch is Ancor 14 gauge. Odd how none of the lights work. Zero. On the center console white light, I redid the connection at the base of the pole, cutting back to clean wire before crimping. Bulbs are good. I did change out my hydraulic steering lines recently. That's my job tomorrow, playing 12V electrician. FISHNFF |

Can your voltmeter be set to ohms? If so, attach a short piece of wire at the bulb end, so there's a connection between the white and black. Back at the switch (disconnect the wire running forward first!), check and see if there's a short with the v/m set on ohms. You could check the black and white wire individually, using a long test wire, but it really does not matter which side went bad, you'll re-wire a new double line anyways. Regards - Don |

Found much of the problem. Some of the wires were broken at the crimp when I pulled my new hydraulic steering lines. The SpecialtyMarine SS bow lights have a VERY CHEAP bulb assembly. I can very gently wiggle the bulb, and the light will go on and off. Imagine that rattling around in the fog! (These lights are going back!) I replaced the 3-position push/pull switch with a Cole-Hersee M-532. I tried to match the wire positions with the old switch, but the configuration was not the same. Can someone please tell me where the wires go? There are 4 screw connectors. Thanks |

In conclusion, I replaced the red and green side lights with Attwood 2nm SS LED deck mount lights, and the masthead console light with an Attwood LED all-around white light. I removed the stern light. FISHNFF |

FISHNFF--Bummer about your Specaility Marine Replacement Outrage Navigation Lights. Your story is not the first I have heard about quality problems. As well as your notes on the electrical component quality, many claim the outer housings / covers rust after a very short exposure to salt environments. While it seems you have already found the right solution for you, have you (or anyone else) seen these LED lights from Sea Dog? The look to be a similar shape and style to the OEM Wilcox Crittenden ones with a much lower profile. They can be had for $75 at most places. I saw them recently and thought they could be a good option for those looking to replace their non-functioning or broken OEM Wilcox Crittenden Navigation lights. http://www.sea-dog.com/groups/1326-led-top-mount-navigation-lights Also, could you post images of the Attwood lights installed? |

The SEA DOG lamps look interesting. If anyone tries them, please let us know. |
