I am thinking about switching out my 99 135 Optimax with a newer (2005) Mercury fourstroke. I would like to do this myself, but have never done it before. How difficult of a job would it be? I am fairly mechanical, would anybody that has done this suggest doing it or paying a pro. Would the fourstroke hook up to all of my existing controls, binnacle, gauges ect..?

if the outboard was brand new i would recommend having a pro do it but since it seems 2nd hand? (just guessing) then im sure you can easily do it. i doubt a control box that old will be compatible with a newer model but check the fittings and cable first. (inside the control box) it might just match up. as far as switching out engines it fairly straight forward. unbolt old, bolt on new, and wire it up! what you might have trouble with is the harness connector, i would check both engines first to see if the harness wires are compatible otherwise you might need to order new ones! Goodluck! |

Actually, it should all hook up just fine. I'd check with a local Merc mechanic, as you might need some things swapped - but so long as that's not a VERADO - and just a "standard" Mercury FourStroke, it should be a pretty straightforward process, and someone who is slightly mechanically inclined can do all the mechanical work without too much trouble at all with the right tools. |

Get a good lift and don't forget to seal the bolts through the transom. |
