So I'm in the process of converting my 13 whaler to a center console. It's a 1985 meaning that it had the storage compartment behind the aft bench seat.

I took that out because it wasn't sturdy enough, and I also wanted more room in the back to make it easier when getting on and off the boat and when swimming and snorkeling. I want to design a storage box that runs about halfway underneath the aft bench seat. I'm thinking that I can design it so it fastens on to the starboard gunnel on one side of the box and the other side will fasten on to a center support that I will put underneath the bench seat. The box would also be about 1"-2" above the deck so water can pass underneath it when I'm washing the boat. To access this box I want to be able to flip up a section of the bench (meaning I would have to cut the bench in half) and the box would be right there. I want to know if any of you have done something similar, and also how you recommend I build it, and what material it should be made of. Suggestions? Thanks!

Once you do something like this it will be permit, and in a small boat space is a commodity. I would rather use a cooler as your storage, you can remove it, replace it, and take it out of the boat when done, use it as a seat, and the water will not hurt it. Now another question is how much money do you want to spend and can you do fiberglass work yourself? Being in Miami there are countless places for fiberglass work, and they can design any custom box you want made. If you are doing a center console for your 13 I would think about a console that will hold your equipment as well, this will give you more bang for the buck per say, and a cleaner look...good luck

Hey contender,
I already have the console. It's a small carolina skiff console.

The problem with using a cooler is that all the coolers I have looked at are to tall compared to the console, so it would look just odd. So a cooler is a no.

I'm thinking of using pine board and cut it to size and screw the cut pieces of wood together to make the box. Then I can glass over it. I've never done fiberglass work, but I have a person who is helping me along the process of converting this boat who knows how to fiberglass.

Another option is to use thin (like 1/4") starboard and build the box with that.

Anyone else have thoughts?

BTW, Contender, I actually don't live in Miami, but I'll be moving down in a few months. Thats why I have it as the 305 haha
