My father recently passed and he had a relatively low hour 20 horse mercury 2 stroke we bought him around 2001.

Just wondering if anyone had seen something this large used as a kicker on a Montauk. I don't even know if it would fit - haven't looked at it in a long time but it's just sitting there going to waste.

I've got a 2002 Mercury 90 two stroke as a main motor. Combined weight I'd think would be around the same as a single Honda so I think the boat could handle the weight - just not sure if there is room.

Spring feaver ponderings I guess... Just wondering if it was feasible or if I'd be better off trading it for something smaller. Most likely would only mount it when going to the coast or on long river trips as a backup.

That's mighty big for a kicker. I use a 5hp Honda 4 stroke on my 15 Sport & it is more than enough for trolling or to get me back home if the main engine died. Would the 90 be able to get you on plane with the added transom weight of a 20?

I don't believe I'd have any trouble getting on plane. I've run with some pretty heavy loads in the past without problems. I guess my concern is more along the lines of would it fit!! I'd just stick it on and try it but it's 4 hours away.

Looking for some advice before making the trip. It's only purpose would be a backup to get me home.

This might help.

It looks like the wood in the hull for the kicker is 10 inches wide by 7" tall.

Thanks Bill.

I had a 10 HP 2S kicker on my 1998 Montauk and thought it was about as much as me or the boat could take...Also had a 100 HP Merc. 2S as the main motor. I think a 5 - 7.5 HP is much more in line.

A 20 HP kicker sure seems a bit much on a 17' boat...

Thanks for the info. May try and trade it for something smaller.

I think you would be a lot happier with something around 5hp - 7.5hp, that's really all the power you need. If you need a little more electrical charging output then something like a yamaha T9.9 or Mercury 9.9 Pro Kicker would suit your needs well. The Mercury is about 10 lbs lighter than the Yamaha.

That's gonna be way too big. Will it fit, yes. Will it float, yes (uneven though). Well it look odd, yes.

I would get a 13 and have at it. Can never have too many Whalers.

And I would not put a T9.9 with e-start/charger on the back of Montauk, that's too much weight (108 lbs). That's 1/3 the weight of the 90 2S merc. (Not very many people would put a 400lb main engine on a Montauk)
