This post is related to another topic I started 2001 "Optimax 135-HP Water Pump Replacement Procedure"

After replacing the impeller and water pump kit I started the boat and usually after this particular procedure in the past the tell tale would take a bit longer than usual to get going.

This time no tell tale at all after several quick starts and stops and checking still nothing. I then removed the lower unit and pump housing and double checked my steps and they all looked good. Put it all back together fired it up and nothing again.

I tried varying the pressure at the muffs broke out the old barrel filled it and tried to no avail.

I then shut it down and removed the hoses at the top of the heads that take warm/hot water out of the system as the system is designed to and noticed the heads were indeed pumping water.

Buttoned that back up and let it run a bit longer this time continuing to watch the temperature at the heads and "block pressure" but still no tell tale. Block psi per gauge indicated 2.o - 2.2 (normal for idle) with new impeller from previous recordings and temperature at the heads never exceeded 150 but still no tell tale.

One thing I did notice was some water discharge from the exhaust port just below the flush/tell tale junction not sure if this is normal the amount of water was not very much though.

Stumped for now any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

could be debris stuck in the telltale, when you replaced the impeller did it have and small pieces chipped off or rotten? that's a really common problem. also check your thermostat to see if it's clogged/stuck and also inspect your water jackets for corrosion/salt buildup. if none of that works, drop the lower unit and clamp a pressurized hose onto the water intake to the head and pressure water through the engine while running.

good luck!

p.s if your water jackets are salt corroded run some 1:1 part lime away and water though the engine for 10 minutes using a bilge pump or water pump hooked up to the water intake line on the outboard. the lower unit must be taken off for this to happen

All is well after tracing the tell tale backwards to the air pump from there back to the strainer. It turns out water was flowing from the strainer to the air compressor as designed however from the compressor to the tell tale there was a blockage.

I verified that by blowing into the hose to the tell tale and there was resistance. I used a bottom bouncer end which is needle like but much stouter and gingerly ran it up the tell tale and it came clean.

All was well after that.
