I'm trying to help a friend upgrade his steering system but first we'd like to figure out what he currently has installed. Here are some (not very good) images of what it looks like:

It's a twin cable rack and pinion set-up which may be original to the boat (an early 1970's Mako). I was going to post this over on the ClassicMako site but it seems they are having some technical difficulties.

Thanks for any assistance you guys can provide.

That's an old Morse twin rack steering system.

Thanks much Tom. Short of an upgrade to a hydraulic system (which my friend probably cannot afford right now) what might you recommend to replace this setup?

What motor?

If it's not more than 150 HP I'd just buy a Teleflex NFB 4.2 system for less than $200.

It's a 200 Merc. Isn't the NFB2 rated for bigger motors?

Teleflex says the NFB 4.2 is "...suitable for most single-station boats with a single non-power-assisted outboard engine up to V-6..." Interpret that how you wish.

You can buy the twin cable version of the NFB 4.2 or even the twin cable version of the Rack system for larger motors; both are still being made.

It's just that that is going to cost more like $400 and at that price I'd be more inclined to upgrade to the Teleflex SeaStar hydraulic for a little more.

Tom is correct, looks like an old dual ride guide by Mercury, you just need a single Teleflex system, this will be just fine.
