I need information about TeleFlex hydraulic steering [apparently for use with a Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK]. My concern is the console helm height [on a 170 MONTAUK]. The unit [perhaps means a particular model of Teleflex hydraulic helm pump] seems to be much taller than my current TeleFlex [helm]. Is this [difference in height between the current helm and the unspecified Teleflex hydraulic helm pump] going to cause the steering unit to be in the way when behind the console? Which model is the most responsive to wheel movement, that is, the least number of turns lock to lock? The Teleflex site isn't clear. This re-fit will be on our 170 Montauk still with a Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE outboard. |

Teleflex usually has extensive literature for their products, although finding it on their website can be a challenge. You should be able to find a dimensioned drawing of the helm pump you are planning to use, and, with those dimensions and a reasoned approach, be able to deduce if the helm pump will fit in the space available on your particular boat's helm console. The number of turns lock-to-lock depends on the volume of the actuator and the pump capacity per turn of the helm pump. |

I want to install either Sea Star or Bay Star in our 170 Montauk. Has anyone done this retro fit[?] Which unit did you use[?] Were any modifications needed to allow room between the helm and the RPS[?] When doing the swap was there any trouble getting the old cable and head unit out to allow for the new install[?] Thanks. |

Hi - A few years ago, I installed Bay Star unit in my 1991 Outrage 19. Job was pretty easy too. No clearance problems at the helm. |

I converted the steering in my classic Montauk from Teleflex cable to Baystar hydraulic, with a kit bought here: http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/ TELEFLEX-HK4200A-BAYSTAR-HDY-STEERING-KIT_p_150.html The job was not too difficult, the price was right and in the end came out nicely, and steers the 115 Merc with ease: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v429/lgoltz/Montauk%2017/?action=view& current=Scan_Pic0030.jpg But I do have two criticisms of the Baystar kit. First of all, the helm is quite tall, so be sure you like the look of it and where it places the wheel. In my case, I didn't, so used Teleflex' recessed mounting plate, which in turn required extra cutting into the helm. The plate is really designed for the Sea Star helms, but it does work on the Baystar helm reasonably well as you can see. In addition, I quickly learned to hate the plastic TUBING that comes with the kit. I could not make it go where I wanted in the relatively open Montauk. So I spent an additional $125 for for Sea Star exact length HOSES. they provide for an excellent rigging situation If you think you may not like the plastic tubing, or the tall helm, you might consider the recessible Sea Star I front mount cylinder kit for the extra money, which includes the higher grade hoses. |
