I have a 1997 Mercury 135hp XL serial # 0G486937, I have replaced the waterpump and it is still not pumping water. Any and all input will be appreciated.

Have you verified it is not pumping water and not merely a clogged tell-tale?

Tom is correct, also not to bust your bubble but did you install the water pump correctly? Are you knowledgeable enough to do this?

Well, if your outboard mechanic installs a new water pump and it does not pump water and he cannot tell you why, I suggest you find a new outboard mechanic.

There are many causes that may indicate or cause the water pump not to be functioning properly. I agree: Check the "pee" hole: Use a piece of weedwacker line to clear. Does it not pump on the flusher or in the water? Was it working prior and the new water pump was a maintenance item? Is the alarm going off? If it does not pump at all, I would drop the lower unit and make sure the water tube is in the top of the water pump housing with the short guide tube installed and with the rubber grommet in the top of the water pump housing. Sometimes this is overlooked when a new housing is installed. Good Luck!

Again Tom and Out are correct, your service person should not have let the engine leave the shop if it was not pumping water, unless you took the engine against his wishes...He should have been able to fix the problem or at least tell you what it was or needed, then the repair should be up to you for him to continue...

That motor needs to warm up first! Before you will see water out of the tell tale the thermostats need to open. Many unaccostumed to this believe the engine is not pumping water when they so nothing existing the telltale upon initial start up.

My dads 9.9 merc is like this, but it at least dribbles water. When the motor is cold water dribbles from the tell tale, and as the motor gets hot the flow of water increases dramatically. But it always at least dribbles..

If the current behavior is different than prior to the pump replacement, then maybe it was a simple mistake such as the impeller being installed with the fingers pointed the wrong way?
