Hi everyone. I've drilled several 3/4-inch holes in my hull below the waterline in order to evacuate water trapped in the foam. I am now wondering how to repair properly these holes when it will be dry. I know that the Boston Whaler standard procedure is to use polyester resin with mashed fiberglass, however is it fully applicable to holes below waterline? I've always been told that below waterline epoxy repairs were required. Please give me your best advice. Cheers--Michael. |

Tom is correct, but I would flip the boat sand down the areas in question and use fiberglass, same material one same bond...To each his own |

Thanks guys, I'll go for fiberglass and polyester. And the good news is that I've just been given by a friend 2kg of mashed fiberglass and a few bags of glass microspheres to make my repair mixes :) !! |

I concur that for a 3/4" hole I would use polyester. Here is how I would proceed: I would sand down about 2 inches around the holes to make a depression that feathers in to the surrounding gelcoat, but right at the hole is a 1/4" thick. re-foam most of any void created, then fill the remaining with chopped fibers and resin to the bottom of your divot. Use cloth circles of increasing sizes to fill in the circular depression you sanded out. This will take several layers. Sand flush, then re gelcoat. |

I would just follow the advice Boston Whaler specifically provides for this sort of repair: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/repairInstructions.html In fact, I did: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/whalerRepair.html |

Thank you guys for the advice. Tom, I had read the article from Taylor concerning the repair you made on his Boston Whaler. Great job, I've learnt a lot from this ;-) ! I will follow these instructions. Cheers, Michael. |
