I have a [standard rotation] but troubled 1989 Mercury 150-HP BlackMax. I found a 1992 very troubled 150 BlackMax that is counter rotating. I would need to make one good motor out of two bad motors. How does this direction change happen? If they used the gear shift for forward and reverse, that would make some sense, but it is argued that the [outboard engine power head] just runs or rotates backwards. Also, it is said that the gear pack in the lower unit is the reason for its reverse direction.I have a good lower unit and a good power head that could be used to correct a ccw motor, but need to understand how they do that.

Powerheads turn the same way, the difference is extra gearing in the lower unit.I converted one of my 1989 standard rotation Mercury 150 motors to a counter rotation motor by simply bolting on the counter rotating lower unit from a 1994 150. I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing this for a single on an Outrage 18 though. |

Thanks Tom,I posted here also so a broad response would be possible. Not to bait you or second guess anyone. The original steering pin is now wire brushed, cleaned and painted. I have it in place on the mid section and feel without finding an affordable steering pin, this will be the result. The counter rotating BlackMax would be another corrosion motor and be close to what I have now. except I am well on the way to getting back on the water. |

I have a counter rotation motor on an Outrage 18 and notice no difference in handling from a standard rotation motor. |

Even when I dock-I doubt anyone would be able to guess it was a counter rotation engine, other than to ask why the boat handles so well- |

This has always puzzled me: There is no difference in handling, between either direction lower unit, on a single engine boat. The "standard" is a right hand prop. Using a counter rotation lower unit does not change how the boat handles! The only downside is the availability of left hand props vs right hand props. |
