A Mercury OptiMax 125-HP when starting produces a lot of smoke, like turning a lot of oil, and, then after a while, stops and will not start until later. [Seeks advice on the cause of this problem and on any remedy--jimh]

Diagnosing this problem will most likely require hooking the engine up to diagnostic equipment to review the run history and stored fault codes. The electronic oil pump is controlled by the engine computer and varies the oil delivery based on "load" that is calculated by the engine computer based on sensor inputs. There are check valves in the oil pump and perhaps you a have a bad check valve and thus way too much oil is getting into the engine. This could even be happening when the engine is not running.......oil being gravity fed into the engine through a stuck open check valve. You could at least disconnect the output clear oil lines (one at a time) to see if oil is running out of the pump on the output side (with the engine not running). There are also check valves in the output lines that could be checked with a hand vacuum/pressure pump. If the engine is getting oil, but not fuel, it is going to smoke alot. You could have clogged fuel injectors or direct injectors. Remember, on the Optimax, oil is delivered into the engine via a seperate system from the fuel system. Oil is NEVER mixed in the gas. So it is possible that the oil system is working and the problem is with the fuel delivery system. The engine can and will try and run just on the oil, but it needs fuel to keep running. |
