Hi Everyone,

I have a Johnson 90 VRO (1996 I believe) that is mounted to a 71 Sakonnet. My question is related to gas slowly leaking after I shut the motor down. When I raise the motor after it has been running, the gas/oil mixture will leak and run down the front side of the engine and into the rear well. Makes a mess of the well and also the engine. One solution I have tried is pulling the gas hose and running the engine to where it is just about out of gas and then shutting down. Works for the last trip of the day, but not for when I am running it all day (we pull up onto beaches and have to raise the engine).

Any ideas on solving the problem?

Thanks

It's the carbs. Had this problem with my Evinrude 150. (1998). My man put new kits (bowls?) on all 6 of them and the problem stopped.

Sounds like you have the original plastic bowls on the carbs. They warp from the ethanol and eventually leak. That was the problem on my 1992 Johnson 90. All replacement bowls are now aluminum.

The carbs will drain when the motor is tilted. This is normal. They drain forward into the air intake box, and from there, there is a nipple with a hose that runs back to the intake manifold, where it should all go. If it's leaking into your splashwell, either your air box is cracked, or it's gasket is compromised, or the little hose that drains the air box back into the intake manifold is broken or detached.
