I've got a 16 degree Johnson 90 with optical timing.Had the power pack and fuel pump replaced recently but it still idles too low and does not run well at low rpm.Sputters at times when powering up to high rpms but does run well at sustained high rpm's Mechanic thinks its an electical problem but not sure wha. (FYI if this means anything) while running he pulled plug wire for No 1 cylinder and the engine dies but engine still runs ok when 2-4 wires pulled.Compression also good on all cylinders Any ideas?

Sounds like the gas is not getting to the cylinders correctly, you pull the wires and its the same? something tells me that those cylinders are not firing, go through the fuel system, clean it out....good luck

Talk to a mechanic who knows how to perform a cylinder leakdown test. You could have scuffed pistons and still show good compression readings due to the oil film inside the engine.

This assumes that the carbs, timing, ignition, and linkage are all in good shape and operating normally.

"I've got a 16 degree Johnson 90 with optical timing"

I guessing you must have a Johnson V4 with a 60-degree vee-block.
