This might be as simple as a battery. My 90-HP Evinrude FICHT occasionally does not want to start after running fine for the day. Many times, this is after I have fished shallow water and had to raise and lower the motor a few times and only run it for short periods between using the power tilt. When I try to start the motor, it has an odd sound, almost like there is too much compression and the engine does not crank very fast, and the starter does not seem to want to stay engaged. If I wait for a while, like 30-45 minutes, it will usually start and run fine. This only happens some times, not on any regular basis. Anyone have any similar experience or ideas?

Check your battery and connections carefully. If it's getting old have it load tested.Butch |

Many Evinrude engines have controllers that will not generate spark until the cranking speed reaches a certain minimum RPM. If you have a weak battery, the engine is probably not cranking fast enough to enable spark, and it will never start under those conditions. |

The next time the motor will not crank over, check the voltage at the starter post and the starter frame. If it is below 10 volts, then look for a supply problem starting with the battery. If it is close to about 12 volts, then there may be an internal starter problem. If you have access to a clip on DC ammeter, that would be ideal as you can see what the current draw is. |

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I talked with a mechanic today who said I should get a new battery. I looked at the one in the boat and it is from 2007. I'm thinking I may have found the problem. When I saw the age of the battery, I felt pretty foolish for even posting the question. |
