Author Topic:   Foam pads on top of internal fuel tanks as floor support

I think the foam pads on the top on my 1983 Revenge 22 provided some structural support for the deck. I know these two pieces of foam are sure wedged in here. The board must be glued or secured from the bottom.

I did not plan on foaming in my new yet to be purchased tank. I do think some sort of pad or support for the deck should be in my plans. Something that sheds water.

Any ideas on an easy way to get these pads out besides ripping and tearing?

Try to pull the wood out that's on top of the foam 1st, undo all the screws the width of the board, and go forward farther than you think, you have no way of telling how long that board is. I can not see using any type of glue to hold the foam in place, I think someone just force it in place for support...good luck

The foam is not structural. Whaler abandoned it's use sometime before December 1986 (it was not present on my 18' Outrage when I removed the deck, but it was present on my 1983 25' Outrage Cuddy).

I would not replace it - allow air to flow between the tank and the deck. That is my personal opinion, but it is what I plan to do when I get my deck back on the boat.

It is just a repository for grime, muck, mold, mildew and whatever else likes dark, wet environments. None of which I want anywhere near the enclosed cabin where I sleep.

I just checked my deck covers for my Outrage Cuddy.

Is this the junction point for the fuel tank cover and the one that goes forward toward the cuddy?

If so, mine is done slightly differently.

I can take photos, if you like, as I have all the deck covers off my boat right now.

I believe this is the same deck joint on the Outrage:

On mine, Whaler simply extended the lowest strata of plywood core material back a few inches to provide a lip for the sternward deck to attach to.

As you can see in the photo, the foam is still present as I haven't yet removed the forward deck cover. The foam was "sandwiched" in place in a few spots, but I don't think it offered any structural rigidity/benefit. I threw mine away once I had it all out of the boat.

Here's a shot slightly forward of that deck joint. On the 25' Outrage, this is where the rigging tunnels terminate and the Cuddy Cabin footwell/storage area begins.

I believe you have a 22' Revenge, so your hull liner is somewhat different, but that foam is probably clamped onto the flat area at the front of your fuel tank, which has it stuck for the moment.

The board must glued or attached from the bottom. I got the foam pad out with a bread knife. I will not be able to break the tank loose from the foam at the bow end, no room to work.
