I just got off the phone with Boston Whaler. They do not recommend mounting a kicker to the starboard or port transom due to lack of wood. However, I asked how the lift eyes were supported if there is no wood back there. He then told me that there may be a small piece of wood back there but there is no way to know. See the following two diagrams for the exploded assembly and the wood locating diagram. http://whalerparts.com/Diagrams/1998/.../6-1-2.pdf http://whalerparts.com/Diagrams/2005/...281%29.pdf The question I have is this: How can the lift eyes be structurally secure if there is no wood back there? Aren't they going to be subjected to more force than if I were to mount a kicker motor (either clamped directly onto the transom or off of a static bracket) back there? I am interested in mounting the kicker directly to the transom (by cutting away some of the fiberglass/foam as detailed on this site).

I have an early 2002 Montauk 170. It also has minimal wood in the transom, since it was made before Boston Whaler added wood to the starboard transom, for a kicker, in July 2002. When I made the same inquirey of Boston Whaler, it was suggested that I use "Seacast" in the transom. I have not tried it yet, but that is the plan. I also plan to mount a 9.9 hp kicker, directly on the transom. The address, for Seacast is: :http://www.transomrepair.netGood luch, let us know how you go. Bill |

Bill, Thanks for the reply. Very interesting info about the Seacast. On an intact transom, did they indicate how to apply/use? For everyone else, what would be the risk to mounting a kicker to the transom without wood back there. I would use a fairly large backing plate to "distribute" the load.

The instructions, on the Seacast, indicate that the top portion of the transom would need to be removed, and reset. In my conversation, with Boston Whaler, they were not enthusiastic about mounting a kicker, on the boat. After questioning about several alternatives, they suggested the Seacast. I too, thought that the motor could be mounted directly to the transom, causing little stress, on the hull, however they were not in favor of it.I have not yet proceeded, with this project, because I have not yet obtained a suitable kicker. Good Luck, Bill
