I am restoring a 1988 Montauk and it came with an awful looking bow locker hatch cover that weighed a ton. I ordered a new one from Specialty Marine, it's a nicely finished mahogany plywood cover, but I really wanted the original teak 6 board hatch cover. Before I threw away the old one I had removed, I did some disassembly to see if any of the original hatch was used for the cover that was there. Underneath gobs of paint and a sheet of aluminum attached with 70 screws was the original hatch cover. Now I want to restore it, but they added some reinforcements on the back and I am not sure what was there originally.

Can anyone provide pictures of the back of a bow locker hatch?

There are two cross members that hold the boards together. Mahogany is used, about 5/4 x 2 nominal dimension.

Whaler used 1-1/4" #10 philipps screws, 4 per board, installed crudely with a screw gun, no counter sinking, no pegs.

Since I was varnishing, I removed each screw one at a time, drilled for a 3/8" peg, and re-installed a shorter #10 x 1" screw, covered with a mahogany peg. Came out with a really nice finished look. No photo.

Can you give me some measurements? I would like to know the distance between the front edge and the hinged edge and the cleats? There are 3 cleats on my hatch cover now, and I am guessing that the originals rotted out and they replace al of them. The lifting hole goes right through the cleat near the front edge, and that doesn't seem right.

I'm sorry but I can't. My boat is 300 miles away right now, and besides, my '79 has the 5 board cover and your '88
would have the wider 6 board cover.
