Has anyone installed a jack plate on a Montauk 17? Is it beneficial to do so for running shallow water? I live in Redfish heaven Louisiana and am considering this modification.

Yes, I have installed a CMC jack plate on my Montauk 17 with good results. Top speed went to 43-MPH from 39-MPH and I can creep around in 12-inches of water without the engine needing to be fully tilted. It does add 40-lbs to the back, and the Montauk is not a flats boat so it won't just jump on a plane in such shallow water.
I like being able to put the plate down in deeper rough water, pull it up to get top speed, then all the way up when trolling around in the shallows. Makes the Montauk even more versatile.

Thanks ahead of time for any additional replies. I have been doing a lot of research on installing a jackplate on my 1989 Montauk. My main concern is this. The original dealer installed the 90 Yamaha using the blind holes on the bottom of my engine mount, rather then using the standard 9 7/8 holes. Every jackplate seems to have the standard hole pattern of 12 7/8 top and 9 7/9 bottom. I really don't want to re-drill my transom if possible. I have contacted CMC, Atlas and Bob's Machine shop and inquired about re-drilling their jackplate at the blind hole location. The CMC and Atlas tech folks could not confirm I would have room on the plate to re-drill holes at that location. Bobs (my first choice)confirmed I wouldn't. (No metal at that location) My rough measurements of the bottom blind holes are drilled 10 7/8 apart and 5 7/8 below the top 12 7/8 holes. Has any one redrilled a jackplate to fit the blind hole location? If so, what was the make of the manufacturer and were you happy with the end result? I am most interested in the hydraulic versions and will be using mine in salt water.

Because you are a saltwater boater, you should take a close look at a Detwiler jackplate, made by Teleflex.
They are made from black anodized aluminum plate, and will hold up much better in the salt. A mill finish jackplate is strictly for fresh water, and you will get considerable galvanic corrosion around the SS bolts.

For detail, the photo can be enlarged twice by clicking the lower right corner. With this plate, you can re-drill for the blind holes.
As you can see in this photo, you should also add some additional anode protection to the jackplate. I used coarse thread 1/2" SS bolts and Mercury's aluminum bolt anodes. The are two on each side, and they really do offer protection.

Even with battery in the stern, and 300# engine, the 6" setback jackplate does not affect Montauk static boat trim at all. The boat accelerates like a rocket out of the hole and cruises comfortably at 30 MPH and 3200 RPM.

I installed a bob's a couple of years ago with my 90 hp fourstroke Suzuki. Works great and helps tremdously when idling into shallow water and overall performance. You will be glad you have one on the coast.

Thanks guys. It appears that I may be able to redrill the Detwieler where my blind holes exist? I'm going to contact them Monday and inquire.
