After you've applied your varnish, and some years down the road when it's not looking quite as nice, do you need to strip it down to bare wood again? Or, just sand down a couple layers with a high grit paper then apply new coats of varnish to bring it back to life?

If the varnish skin has not been compromised, with no black spots, peeling, trapped water, etc, just scuff sand the old varnish surface with 3M "Sandblaster" grade 220 paper, and re-varnish 2 coats. If the original multi-coat varnish surface is still excellent and not showing wear spots, just dulled, you can orbital buff it back up to a high gloss with 3M Finessit-II. The results are glass-like amazing. |

Scuff sand, remove dust, apply a couple of coats. I use 120 actually 3M C weight fre cut commercial paper maybe finer don't know. Viscosity of spar varnish and easy process pretty much fool proof. Rule of thumb, again, when finish loses 50% of original gloss, scuff sand and apply a couple of coats.
