I've searched the internet high and low and found some threads on this topic but they are old and the pictures do not seem to be available anymore.

Possibly with new products available can anyone offer some help on this subject ?

I'm pulling crab pots 200-250ft in Monterey Bay but would love to drop my Shrimp pots again in this little 450ft hole too :-)

Thanks again !

Tobias

Are you looking for an electric or hydraulic setup or just a davit to pull sport traps. For my sport traps I made a davit that pins onto my Scotty Downrigger mount. Just two aluminum arms with a roller between them at the tip. Works for me here in Santa Cruz.

I have a little davit that drops into a rail mounted Scotty rod holder socket. It's completely useless. As soon as you put any load on it, the rail mounted socket rotates down and the davit is left pointing straight down. http://www.amazon.com/Scotty-749-Trap-ease-Trap-Roller/dp/B004O0JBPC/ ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_2/179-9961851-3977600

I've heard good things about these, but I'm not sure if a rail mounted downrigger base would be strong enough. http://www.acelinehauler.com/

Sherman, where do you set pots near Santa Cruz, and how deep? I have a few Danielson pots, but the lack of a puller and the deep fishing that seems prevalent around here has kept me from using them for anything other than rock crabs.

I've been setting between five mile and Davenport in 190 to 220 ft of water. But for me the crab for a 6 hour soak was about 1 crab per pot. Now that the commercial guys are setting pots I would just set in the same area but one trap outside and one of my two traps inside check in a couple of hours and move pots to the most productive area. I have heard they are getting some near Pajaro but I don't know how deep. By the way I built my own rail mounts and have no problems with them. The are 3/16 alum. bent in a z shape over the top of the rail and down and around the gunnel. I put a 5?16 hook to grab the outside of the rubrail.

I have an Ace Line Hauler mounted on a Scotty swivel base on the gunnel of the Revenge. It works well. I just helped a friend install a Scotty rail mount on his Montauk. I would not risk trying to haul up a 40 pound shrimp pot with 500 feet of weighted line with any pot puller using the rail mount as a base for the puller. If you got hung up on bottom, snagged another pot's line or had a big old octopus climb on top of the pot, it has happened to me, you will break something.

Mount the pot puller on the gunnel.

Sherman, thanks for that info. Do you have any photos of your setup?

John, thanks for that advice as well. I think I would need to reinforce my rail base before I tried hauling pots with it. I'm not sure that I could fit a pot puller on the gunwale because my custom rail will be in the way.

I have toyed with the idea of a crab pot puller using the OEM bulkhead mounted forward pedestal seat assembly on my 1987 Montauk. This would probably be the only vertical location with sufficient strength to mount a crab pot puller. While this set up would center the weight of the pulling mechanism and crabpot, the bow is not an ideal location for trap recovery and thus I have been reluctant to try it.

Rob, your Whaler is way to pretty to muck up pulling crab pots. Get that idea out of your head right now. We'll take my boat, which is used to getting blood, beer and the sea-bottom all over it's deck.

I have used the rails on my Montauk for years with down riggers and pot puller. I have a special "L" bracket that mounts to the "T" in the rails, and quite robust. -- However I also over-drilled the rail screw holes, filled with fiberglass mash, re-drilled, and sealed with 3M 3200. I can flex the entire side of the hull/gunnel pushing and pulling on the rail.

I will also say, that I typically 'pop' my pots off the bottom before loading the puller. I have hung up once with a down rigger (with wire on a different boat) and will never forget that experience. (I now exclusively use braided line that can be cut in a flash.)

I will try and get some pictures in photobucket of the bracket. I absolutely love them, because they are clean looking, and required no new holes. If I could find new ones, I would buy another set.

kwik-wurk, I'd love to see photos of your set up. Sounds like it works well.

Here are the bases, with Canon swivel mounts for the larger digi troll downriggers. Granted they are not mounted on the rails at this moment.

The boat is still on the buoy, and it was 29 when I woke up, so was not going to row out to it in the frost. Maybe this weekend.
