Check on SHOP.EVINRUDE.COM under the OB ACCESSORIES category. You will find 1981 side mount control is listed. I don't see in the exploded view diagram that there are alternative housings. It is difficult to link directly to the diagram because it is presented in a frame on another page. You should be able to navigate to it without too much difficulty from the top page.

Thanks, Jim. Checked it out - there's no accessory or adapter available. I'm going to stick with the standard side mount I have, since anything new (i.e., binnacle mount) is just way too pricey.

If you are talking about the old simplex dual level evinrude control box then yes you can convert it to a left side mount.

To reverse mount the regular control box that came with the motor, just remove the throttle lever and its index plate and install on the opposite side of the box.
This was done often on center console boats when the side mount control was used instead of a binnacle style.

Thanks. I'll see if that works. I wanted to mount it on the right side of a center console if I decided to install a center console. My control is the single-lever OMC type with the safety lanyard cutoff. It might be that the control box is newer and can't be reversed. If so, I'll just mount it conventionally on the starboard riser board.

Why not trade it in at the marine boneyard for a binnacle mount control box.

Rich, I'm working on the swap angle, too. Not much luck so far...
