posted 12-04-2013 11:39 AM ET (US) I am planning to install side rails on my 1987 13 footer. It was produced as a tiller model without rails. On my former 13 footers (all early-mid '70's models), the rail side support brackets mounted with a plate on the outside of the hull that connected through the side to the hardware piece inside. My question is: Since there are embedded wood plates in at least 5 locations along the side on the later models (such as my 1987), do they still use the thru-gunwale mounting plates on the outside?

So, nobody on CW has an '80's 13 Sport at which they could take a quick look and see if there's any external hardware fastenings for the side rail supports? Really?

I would do/use the through hull fittings that you are talking about, I do not think that screws will hold up to the pressure holding on to the rails, I think the screws will come loose.

Thanks for the reply. My question is whether or not the later ('80's and newer) even used the older models' mounting system, since there's embedded plywood plates in the locations where the standoffs would be attached. I don't want to use the old style mounting if it's not used on my 1987 model.

Try giving Fred Caldwell a call at OEM provider below. He provided the railings to Boston Whalers built in Rockland, MA I'll bet he can give you excellent advice.
