I am working on "Reel Easy", 1974 Outrage 21. The console face where mountings are located has been cut to shreads. It has been suggested that I completely cut out the original face of the console and install an insert which will be the new mounting surface. I purchased a half-inch-thick piece of boat board from PlasTeak which I will be using for the insert.

In addition I purchased some 3/4" x 3-1/2" PlasTeak boards that I will be using as gunwale caps.[This material was chosen instead of actual teak wood because] I need to minimize my maintainance time on this boat. In reality it looks pretty good. [The] only [other material for the gunwale caps] that might be better is only available in China. I would love [to hear replies with] thoughts from board [about these repairs and materials].

In my opinion, repairs, modifications, and materials used to restore classic Boston Whaler boats do not have to be limited to original materials or designs. Many owners have made extremely good repairs or modifications, using a variety of materials, and have produced improvements in these older boats. I judge repairs and revisions based on how well they are done and what utility they provide, more than just considering if they were employed on the original boat.
