I want to keep a 1984 22' Outrage with a Yamaha 225-HP Ox66 in the water behind my house. What is the best modification to keep water out of the compartments? The [two compartments] [I]'m most concerned about are the largest compartment forward of the console and the anchor locker. I was thinking of installing bilge in the largest and connecting the two.

Leave the plug out in the anchor locker and add pump to the midship locker.

The front compartment doesn't collect a lot of rain water; I have my livewell dual-outlet pump in this compartment with the washdown pick-up attached to the livewell pump. I have a three-way valve that I flip to draw water from the compartment with the washdown pump when it needs pumping (rather than an automatic bilge pump).

Why do you want to keep it in the water year-round? I'm a Seattle guy, so we always pull our boats, but, if you're in a year-round environment, I get it. We still boat year-round (great Winter salmon season) but few leave their boats on buoy with our winters. You could, but I wouldn't

Mkelly--I don't believe Mike said "year round". If he and the boat are in Delaware he likely hauls for the really cold weather unless he is in Saltwater.

For the factory advice about how to handle the drains, please read the owner's manual, which, if you don't have a copy, I have reproduced for you on-line in hypertext. See

On a Boston Whaler 22-foot hull, the forward deck compartment and aft live well will both collect rain water. On a c.1984 boat the aft live well cover is probably wood and poorly sealed. It will fill with rain water in a few hours of a hard rain--I can attest to this from experience. The forward deck center compartment cover is probably a molded and laminated cover. You might be able to improve its seal with some rubber stripping. If the boat sits with its normal stern-low trim, I don't think as much water will collect in the bow deck center compartment, and if you help with the seal, you might be able to minimize water collection there. If the boat sits really bow-high, you might be able to pull the drain plug and have a very low level of water remain in there.

There is no keeping rain water out of the stern live well with the wood hatch cover. If you want to keep it dry for long periods while the boat is left unattended you will need to install a sump pump. The pump will need a good battery to keep it going. You should have an isolated battery so your engine starting battery is not drained by the load of the pump. I have installed a small centrifugal pump in the aft live well of my 22-foot hull.

If it is going at a dock behind your house (an assumption I've made based on your post, which could be off if it is on a mooring behind your house)...I'd install good bilge pumps, solid batteries and keep the batteries on a battery tender using shore power to keep them topped off.
